A Place of Hope
and Healing
Since 1999, the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health
has combined medical expertise with advanced technology for the most
promising new treatments. We are able to provide cancer treatment
services to patients and their families close to home.
In 2015, for the fourth consecutive time, the Robert and Carol Weissman
Cancer Center was awarded accreditation with a commendation by the
Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for a threeyear term. The cancer center also received the Commission on Cancer’s
Outstanding Achievement Award for the second consecutive time, which
was presented to a select group of only 47 accredited cancer programs for
surveys performed in 2015. The award acknowledges cancer programs that
achieve excellence in providing the highest quality care to cancer patients.
Martin Health is one of only three cancer programs in Florida to earn
Outstanding Achievement since 2013.
Radiation Oncology
The department of radiation oncology is an integral part of the most
comprehensive cancer treatment program on the Treasure Coast. Our
board-certified radiation oncologists partner with a team of highly trained
professionals including medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, nationally
certified oncology nurses, and radiologic technicians trained in radiography
and therapeutics.
In addition to being able to provide patients in our community with
treatment for all types of cancers on our Varian linear accelerators, Martin
Health System offers patients one of the most current and innovative
medical technologies available today for radiation patients on the
TrueBeam™. TrueBeam™ can deliver high doses of cancer fighting agents
with accuracy in the fractions of millimeters narrowly targeting tumors and
better able to avoid surrounding tissue and healthy organs. Treatment that
once took 10-30 minutes can now be
completed in less than two minutes.
Martin Health offers patients the
newest way of treating breast cancer
through the use of Intraoperative
Radiation Therapy (IORT) where
patients can be treated in as little as
one day and not the 6-8 weeks of
traditional radiation therapy. Patients
are able to recover more quickly and
return to normal life faster.

Center for Lung Health
Led by Dennis Tishko, MD, FACS, a board
certified thoracic surgeon dedicated solely
to advanced cancer care and surgery, the
Center for Lung Health is committed to a
multidisciplinary approach to diagnose and
treat cancers of the lung, chest and esophagus.
Dr. Tishko pioneered a minimally invasive
surgical technique – single incision videoassisted thoracoscopic surgery, or VATS – that
uses the smallest and least invasive operation
possible to address lung cancer. By using a
single small incision, VATS extends surgical
options to those not usually thought of as
operative candidates and allows for less pain, quicker recovery, shorter
hospital stay and increased patient satisfaction.
A lung health navigator from the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center
is available to provide support and assist with the patient’s overall experience,
from scheduling and referrals through survivorship. Most importantly, the
navigator works proactively with patients and their families to ease the
burden of arranging access to cancer care.
Infusion Suite
The infusion suite offers chemotherapy and medical infusion services
performed by nationally certified oncology RNs with a clinical pharmacist
on site. It is located on the third floor (Suite 302) of the Cancer Center and is
open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Patient comfort is our priority.
To schedule an appointment, call 772.223.5922.
Patient Resource Center and Community
Outreach
The patient resource center on the second floor of the Cancer Center is
open to the public during normal business hours.
Cancer patients, their families and members of the community are
welcome to borrow books from the Cancer Center library or research
cancer-related topics through the internet. Staff and volunteers from Martin
Health’s Auxiliary are available to help and support your individualized
needs. Our clinical social workers and nurse navigators provide additional
support at no cost to those undergoing treatment. Community outreach
programs, including cancer prevention and detection screenings, are
held regularly. For more information on cancer forums, lectures or early
detection screenings, call 772.223.5945, ext. 13704.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Resource Center is also located on
the second floor of the Cancer Center. The CRC is available free of charge
to anyone who has a need and provides access to ACS cancer information,
donated items such as wigs, bras and turbans. Walk-ins are welcomed, but
appointments are encouraged. Patient Service Center: 1.800.227.2345, or
locally: 772.223.5945, ext. 12270.
Medical Nutrition Therapy
The outpatient nutrition program helps patients maintain optimal
nutrition while undergoing treatment, at no cost to the patient or the
patient’s health insurance. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during
and after treatment, and getting enough of the proper nutrients, can
be a challenge. A licensed clinical oncology dietitian can help you eat
healthy, feel better and stay stronger. To schedule an appointment for an
outpatient consultation with a dietitian, call 772.223.5945, ext. 13711.
Oncology Rehabilitation
Complete and comprehensive multi-faceted treatment approach to
those who are at risk for, or who have, lymphedema is offered at Martin
Rehabilitation Centers. The program is offered at many of our outpatient
facilities and includes four components: exercise, skin care, compression, and
manual lymphatic drainage. Treatment is individualized and based on patient
needs and clinical assessment. A physician referral is needed for this program.
For more information, fax a prescription to Martin Rehabilitation Centers
scheduling at 772.781.2715.
In addition, to further extend the continuum of care, patients may transfer
from rehabilitation and/or treatment into our discounted self-pay cancer
medical fitness program at any one of our health and fitness centers. Exercise
often helps restore energy, and our fitness specialists will be there every step
of the way to offer encouagement and instruction. A physician referral is
needed for this program.
For more information

medical fitness
program, call Martin
Health and Fitness at

Clinical Social
Work Services
A licensed clinical oncology social worker
is an integral part of the health care team
at the Cancer Center, collaborating with
other disciplines to provide the team
with an understanding of the patient’s
individual situation. In addition, the social
worker acknowledges the psychosocial
and spiritual concerns of family members
and respects each patient’s personal
dignity by providing care focused on his
or her specific needs. To contact the social
worker, call 772.223.5945, ext. 13719.
Oncology Patient
Navigators
Oncology patient navigators
are clinical professionals
who guide patients through
the confusing process of
diagnosis, treatment and
survivorship. Our nurses
and social workers on the
navigator team serve as
advocates, educators and
supporters throughout
the cancer journey to
survivorship.
In addition to providing facts about cancer treatment and what to expect,
the navigators provide individuals with counseling, support and referrals
to community resources. They can also assist with financial/insurance
questions, transportation to appointments and other barriers or challenges
that a person may experience.
Patient navigation is an integral part of cancer care and the multi-disciplinary
team. Often challenges arise during this already overwhelming experience
and we are here to help.
The patient navigator can also speak with a patient’s physician to clarify
information, helping patients make informed decisions and eliminate any
barriers that may keep them from receiving the health care they need and
deserve.

Support Groups
A general cancer support group is held regularly at the Cancer Center.
Additional support groups include the Breast Cancer Support Group,
Leukemia and Lymphoma Patient and Family Support Group, a Women
with Lung Cancer Support Group, and Caregiver Support Group.
The American Cancer Society’s Look Good, Feel Better Program is also held
here. The Cancer Center also hosts an annual National Cancer Survivor’s Day
celebration. Call 772.223.5945, ext. 13719 for more information.
Genetic Testing
Knowing your hereditary cancer risk may help you and your doctor make
informed decisions for the prevention and early detection of breast, ovarian,
colon cancer and melanoma. For more information call 772.288.5858, option 7.
Philanthropy and Oncology Services
For patients who are dealing with a
cancer diagnosis, hope and peace of
mind can be hard to find.
Thankfully, at the Robert and Carol
Weissman Cancer Center, we make it
a priority to provide not just hope, but
exceptional and award-winning services
right here at home. The generous
philanthropic support from the Treasure
Coast community enables us to purchase
state-of-the-art technology and recruit
world-class physicians and specialists
who save lives every day.
Robert and Carol Weissman
With gifts to the Martin Health Foundation, we are able to offer patient and
caregiver support groups, social services and compassionate guidance
through the complicated journey of cancer treatment and recovery.
We could not do what we do without the benevolent contributions of our
donors, and for that we are deeply grateful. To learn more about how gifts
to the Foundation can transform the patient experience at Martin Health
System, visit GIVEmhf.org.
