Program: Fundations Level 1
Students
Reading Teacher
Summary of Program:
The Fundations program reinforces basic skills that were learned in Kindergarten and
progresses further into the study of word structure. In Units 1 and 2 so far, we have
covered consonant and vowel sound review; segmenting and spelling three-sound short
vowel words; sound manipulation of initial, medial, and final sounds; sentence dictation
procedures; proofreading; and the study of trick words the, of, and. We take our Unit 2
test on 1/28/09.
Our upcoming unit addresses consonant digraphs, use of ck at the end of words, use of
the question mark, additional trick words, narrative vs. expository text, and grouping
words together during reading to improve fluency.
Questions/Concerns from Reading Intervention Teacher:
: vowel confusion is decreasing; can tap out sounds in words; recognizes proper
sentence capitalization and punctuation; occasionally reverses “b” and “d” but this is
beginning to improve
: takes pride in his work and takes pains to make sure it is neat; always pays
attention and follows classroom routine; vowel use is improving; can tap out sounds in
words easily; proofreads sentences for correct capitalization and punctuation; is still
working on the use of “c” or “k” in initial sounds
: works quickly and accurately and is enthusiastic in class; completes tasks
confidently; relates words easily to other words (“if we change this letter we get…”); can
tap out sounds in words easily; loves to participate; occasionally capitalizes words in the
middle of sentences
: quietly works at all times; rarely confuses vowel sounds; easily taps out sounds
in words; can use words in context easily; capitalization/punctuation rarely needs
editing
: has just joined our group but easily follows the routine; consonant sounds are in
place; can already tap out sounds for words; participates often
: can tap out sounds in words; only occasionally confuses vowel sounds now; is
inconsistent with the trick word “of”; is working on remembering “qu” as a team; is
working on remembering correct capitalization
