ATOMS & THE PERIODIC TABLE TEST – STUDY GUIDE
The History of Atomic Theory
 Develop. of Atomic Theory: Democritus to Thomson
 What is an atom? What particle did Thomson discover?
 Develop. Of Atomic Theory: Rutherford to Modern (know all
information up to what the Modern theory says about electrons – do not
need to study last four questions)
 Black Box Activity (not covered on test)
Structure of the Atom
 Atomic Structure Worksheet (yellow) – skim over
 Bill Nye Video (Know #2-6,8)
 Structure of the Atom Notes (very important for test – know the
following:)
1. Protons, Neutrons, and electrons (definition. Charge, location)
2. Nucleus (what percent of mass?), electron mass compared to protons
& neutrons?
3. Atomic Number, Mass Number, Atomic Mass, Atomic Mass Unit,
isotope, ion (definitions – make flash cards for these!!!)
 Atom Foldable – study well!!
 IPPEX: The Atom (skim over for review but don’t spend much time here)
 Nucleus Numbers – do not study
 Isotopes – know definition of isotope and how to write an isotope.
What is the atomic mass based on?
Atomic Models
 Bohr Atomic Models (be able to draw a model of an atom by using the
periodic chart)
 Atomic Models Questions (STUDY WELL!! KNOW ALL!!)
The Periodic Table
 The Periodic Table (know which elements are metals, non-metals or
metalloids)
 The Little People Atoms – Study the background information at top
 The Periodic Table Notes
o Know what each horizontal row is called and what each vertical
column is called.
o Know what all elements in the same column have the same of
valence electrons
o Study well the Alkali Metals, Transition, Boron, Carbon, Halogens
and Noble Gases
 The Power of the Periodic Table Video – ( #2,7,8,9,10,11,12,15,24)
 Sodium Demo (why is sodium so reactive? What 2 substances are produced
when sodium reacts with water?)
 Ions Worksheet – know definition of ion and how to write an ion correctly
TEST WILL BE ON ____________________ ATOMS PACKET IS DUE ALSO!
