AP World History Summer Reading Assignment 2010-2011: Dear Students: We are really excited that you have decided to enroll in AP World History. This course is designed to give you an excellent grasp of global history and global connections from the Neolithic era to the present day. This summer assignment provides you with the opportunity to read two books that will help your general knowledge of global history. There is a wide variety of books on this list. If you begin to read one and it doesn’t suck you in, return it, and choose another one. Find the books that interest you the most, but keep in mind that this is also a college level reading list, not high school, so the books reflect a college mindset and vocabulary as well. Directions: 1. Read two books by the first day of school. Individual quizzes will be given for each book read. 2. Submit two book reports by week 2 of school. The specific day will be given to you in class on the first day of school. 3. The reports need to include the following information: a. Title and author; b. First Paragraph: (minimum of three to five sentences for all) general synopsis of the story c. Second Paragraph: Tell something about the main character. If he or she was a historic figure, how accurate is the writer? d. Third Paragraph: What new history did you learn by reading this book? e. Fourth Paragraph: How accurate is the historical research behind the book? f. Fifth Paragraph: What is your opinion of the book as a piece of historic fiction or as a history? 4. All book reports must be submitted electronically to the email of the teacher whose class you are enrolled in. (Mrs. Kelly) [email protected] or (Ms. Thompson) [email protected] 5. All submissions must be in Word or Notepad. 6. No books may be substituted by the students. Substitutions will be graded as a zero with no exceptions. (this means that, although we know there are many other historical novels out there that are not on this list, you are not able to read something else in place of books on the list) Europe: Books by Region and Genre: America: Poland by James Michener The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown Gods and Generals by Jeff Shaara Armaggedon by Leon Uris The Last Full Measure by Jeff Shaara The Scarlett Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy No Promises in the Wind by Irene Hunt The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas Centennial by James Michener India, Asia, and the Middle East: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larson A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne Siddhartha by Herman Hesse The Jungle by Upton Sinclair Confucius Lives Next Door by T.R.
