The house appears to be bisected along its length ! ! ! ! with two good construction soils (Appling and Mattaponi sandy loam) that have ! different clay strata configurations. ! ! ! ! ! ! Datasheets on these soils are at the end of report. Front of house (South): Rear of house (North, toward river) Mattaponi soil = clay from 13-72” Appling soil has clay from 11-33” (toward road, circular drive). These differing soils were not a problem when the house was constructed with all portions of the building sitting on grade. Until the 20th Century there were little more than crawlspaces underneath and these did not reach to the depth of the clay. But in the last 60 years, the the wings and hyphens have been excavated for basements, some with concrete floors. Each section now has different foundations, some of which may bisect the full depth of the Appling clay, but sit in the Mattaponi. Not to scale Main Block Original foundations. 46” from joists to soil West Wing 66” windowsill to floor West Hyphen 53” windowsill to brick pavers on soil (33” of modern 24” stone under brick, brick beneath) then concrete curb inside wall below that. East Hyphen and East Wing 59” windowsill to concrete floor 18” of original wall visible, then concrete & stone retaining wall built inside. Basement entrance and cutthrough between hyphen & wing are captured full height in concrete, causing fracture of original brickwork
