Skeletal Muscular System
Define and answer the following on a separate sheet of paper:
Skeletal System: the framework of bones and other tissues that supports the
body.
Joints: the places where two or more bones meet.
Ligament: a type of connecting tissue that holds bones to other bones at the
joint.
Cartilage: a strong flexible tissue that allows joints to more easily, cushions
bones and supports soft tissue.
Tendons: a type of connecting tissue that joins muscles to bones and muscles
to muscles.
Muscular System: Provides the body with stability, protection and movement.
Skeletal muscle: a muscle attached to bones that enable you to move your
body.
Cardiac muscle: muscle found in the walls of your heart.
Smooth muscle: a type of muscle found in organs and in blood vessels.
1. Identify two types of joints and give an example of each:
a. Immovable Joint: skull
b. Movable Joint: joints in hands and feet
2. Explain the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles.
a. Voluntary muscles, are muscles that you control to make your
body move, like your skeletal muscles. Involuntary muscles work
on their own, without your control; like your cardiac and smooth
muscles.
3. What are the three injures to bones or muscles that can occur?
a. Fracture (bone)
b. Dislocation (bone, joint, ligament)
c. Sprain (bone and joints)
d. Strain (small tear in muscle or tendon)
4. How can good posture contribute to bone and muscle strength?
a. Good posture means the bones and joints in your back stay in place
and your muscles are being used properly. Exercises like running,
walking, swimming and cycling can maintain and build muscle
strength to keep a person healthy.
