ApplicationsareinvitedforthepositionofaPhDstudent(EarlyStageResearcher) in Cellulose-based structurally coloured surfaces within the Marie SkłodowskaCurie Innovative Training Network Plant-inspired Materials and Surfaces – PlaMatSu(www.plamatsu.eu).PlaMatSubringstogetherplantbiologists,polymer chemistsandsoftmatterphysiciststoexplorethecuticleofplantpetalsandplant leaves in order to develop novel bio-inspired materials and surfaces. The successfulcandidatewillbepartofacuttingedgeresearchteamattheUniversity of Cambridge and will receive a multitude of training opportunities in a truly interdisciplinary setting, including secondments at major European industry partners. Good skills in soft matter and colloidal systems are expected. The candidateshouldbefamiliarwithfundamentalconceptsofcolloidalstabilityand surfaceforces.Keyconceptscover:DLVOtheoryofcolloidalinteractions(e.g.van derWaals,electrostatic,steric,depletionforces),fundamentalacid-basetheoryof electrolytes, liquid crystalline phase transition, surface wetting and capillary forces,gelationandpercolation,opticalbirefringenceandpolarizedmicroscopy imaging. Thecandidatewillbehands-onwithlaboratorytechniquesandcommonmaterial characterization tools. Experience in colloidal self-assembly, liquid crystals, natural polymers and surface functionalization are an advantage.
