War Bond Drives
World War II was very expensive. To collect
money for the war, Americans purchased war
bonds. A person could purchase a $25 War
Bond for $18.75. The government would take
that money to help pay for tanks, planes, ships,
uniforms, weapons, medicine, food, and
everything else the military needed to fight and
win. Ten years from the time you purchased
your War Bond you could redeem it and get $25.

Mobilization of the war
industry during WWII
1. Many people joined the armed forces
2. Factories were retooled to produce things
needed for war, rather than for things and
home, e.g. automobile plants stopped making
cars and made tanks, planes and boats instead.
3. Women and minorities entered the workforce in
jobs where they hadn’t been before.
4. Goods were rationed so there would be more
available for the military.

The Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway (June 4-7, 1942) was fought at
the US base at Midway atoll in the Pacific Ocean.
The US had broken the Japanese code and knew
there was going to be a Japanese attack. The US
attacked the Japanese navy before the attack and
greatly reduced the fighting ability of the Japanese
navy. Before this, the Japanese navy was superior
to the US Navy. After this, the US navy was able to
win battles against the Japanese navy at move
forces closer to Japan. This was a turning point of
the war in the Pacific.
