THE CONCEPT OF –ISMs
1. What’s the diff b/w imperialism, isolationism &
expansionism?
Imperialism—using force to control the gov’t / economy of a
weaker nation or area
Isolationism—focusing only on the domestic issues of your
country
Expansionism—adding territory NOT using force; usually by buying or trading

a. Spheres of influence (see vocab)
3. Explain the Open Door Policy.
a. US plan to open China up to trade by giving all countries an equal opportunity to trade there. The plan did
away with spheres of influence allowing countries to trade anywhere in China
b. Led to much Chinese anger resulting in the unsuccessful Boxer Rebellion (see vocab)

a. Andrew Johnson / William Seward
5. What was the nickname given to Alaska? Why was it unfair/untrue?
a. “Seward’s Folly” (mistake) or “Seward’s Icebox”
b. Not a good nickname—whereas Alaska appeared to be a barren wasteland it was rich in natural resources
such as timber, coal, iron, gold & oil

a. US + Cuba won-- Cuba gained independence from Spain
11. What did the US gain (be specific)?
a. Territories that used to belong to Spain—Puerto Rico, Philippines, Guam & Wake Islands
b. Sugar from Cuba
12. How did the Philippines react when the US decided to take control of it? What role did
Emilio Aguinaldo play?
The Filipinos were very angry they were being denied independence. Emilio
Aguinaldo led Filipino rebels against the US but was defeated. The Philippines
was controlled by the US as a territory until 1946.

14. What is an isthmus?
a. A narrow strip of land connecting 2 larger pieces of land (Latin America is an isthmus that connects N &
S America)
15. How did the US achieve its goal of a canal?
a. Encouraged Panama to rebel against Colombia… US supported the rebellion… Colombia won its
independence & the US was able to build the canal
16. What was the purpose of the canal?
a. Much shorter trade route
i. Prior to the canal, ships travelling from NYC to CA had to go all the way around the tip of S.
America—with the canal this shortened the trip by 50%

a. Teddy Roosevelt’s foreign policy for Latin America / Caribbean; it said that if Latin America / Caribbean

19. How did TR change the Monroe Doctrine?
a. Monroe Doctrine said no European countries could colonize in Latin / South America. Teddy Roosevelt
added the Roosevelt Corollary that said the US COULD interfere in Latin / South America (Europe still could
not).
