Respiratory Disorders Pneumonia Inflammation of infection of the lungs with exudate (buildup of fluid) in the alveoli. Causes: bacteria, viruses, or chemicals Symptoms: chills, fever, chest pain, productive cough, dyspnea, fatigue Pneumonia (cont’d) Treatment: Bed rest, fluids, antibiotics, pain medication, respiratory treatments Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) (Also known as the “common cold”) Inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the upper resp tract Causes: viruses; URIs are HIGHLY contagious COVER YOUR COUGH PROPERLY Symptoms: fever, runny nose, watery eyes, congestion, sore throat and hacking cough Symptoms usually last about 1 week Treatment: take medications to treat symptoms (analgesic, antipyretics, rest, antihistamines) Asthma Respiratory disorder usually caused by sensitivity to allergens such as dust, pollen, an animal or food Asthma attacks can be caused by overexertion, stress and infection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA9C_aCH7F0 Asthma (cont’d) Symptoms: dyspnea, wheezing, coughing, chest tightness Treatment: bronchodilators (inhaler), epinephrine, oxygen therapy Emphysema Noninfectious, chronic resp condition that occurs when the walls of the alveoli deteriorate and lose elasticity; CO2 is trapped Emphysema (cont’d) Causes: heavy smoking, prolonged exposure to air pollutants Symptoms: dyspnea, feeling of suffocation, pain, chronic cough, rapid respirations These symptoms can lead to resp failure and death Treatment: bronchodilators, oxygen therapy, resp therapy, NO SMOKING Lung Cancer Leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Causes: The main cause is exposure to carcinogens in tobacco Symptoms: None in the early stages; in later stages-cough, hemoptysis, dyspnea, fatigue, chest pain Lung Cancer (cont’d) Prognosis: Poor Treatment: surgical removal of the cancerous sections, radiation, chemo Epistaxis Nosebleed-capillaries in the nose become congested and bleed Causes: injury or blow to the nose; hypertension, anticoagulant drugs, blood diseases Epistaxis (cont’d) What do you do?
