Respiratory Disorders
Pneumonia
Inflammation of infection of
the lungs with exudate
(buildup of fluid) in the
alveoli.
Causes: bacteria, viruses, or
chemicals
Symptoms: chills, fever, chest
pain, productive cough,
dyspnea, fatigue
Pneumonia (cont’d)
Treatment:
Bed rest, fluids, antibiotics, pain
medication, respiratory treatments
Upper Respiratory Infection (URI)
(Also known as the “common
cold”)
Inflammation of the mucous
membrane lining the upper
resp tract
Causes: viruses; URIs are
HIGHLY contagious
COVER YOUR COUGH
PROPERLY
Symptoms: fever, runny nose, watery eyes, congestion,
sore throat and hacking cough
Symptoms usually last about 1 week
Treatment: take medications to treat symptoms
(analgesic, antipyretics, rest, antihistamines)
Asthma
Respiratory disorder usually caused by
sensitivity to allergens such as dust,
pollen, an animal or food
Asthma attacks can be caused by
overexertion, stress and infection

Asthma (cont’d)
Symptoms: dyspnea,
wheezing, coughing,
chest tightness
Treatment:
bronchodilators
(inhaler), epinephrine,
oxygen therapy
Emphysema
Noninfectious, chronic resp condition that
occurs when the walls of the alveoli
deteriorate and lose elasticity; CO2 is
trapped
Emphysema (cont’d)
Causes: heavy smoking,
prolonged exposure to
air pollutants
Symptoms: dyspnea,
feeling of suffocation,
pain, chronic cough,
rapid respirations
These symptoms can lead
to resp failure and death
Treatment:
bronchodilators,
oxygen therapy,
resp therapy, NO
SMOKING
Lung Cancer
Leading cause of cancer
death in both men and
women.
Causes: The main cause is
exposure to carcinogens
in tobacco
Symptoms: None in the
early stages; in later
stages-cough,
hemoptysis, dyspnea,
fatigue, chest pain
Lung Cancer (cont’d)
Prognosis: Poor
Treatment: surgical removal of the
cancerous sections, radiation, chemo
Epistaxis
Nosebleed-capillaries in
the nose become
congested and bleed
Causes: injury or blow to
the nose; hypertension,
anticoagulant drugs,
blood diseases
Epistaxis (cont’d)
What do you do?
Compress the nostrils toward the septum
Elevate the head and tilt it forward
slightly
Apply cold compresses
Nasal Packs
