commutator, brushes, axle, field magnet and DC power
supply of some sort. AN eletric motor is all about
magnets and magnetism: a motor uses magnets to
create motion. If you have ever played with magnets
you know about the fundamental law of all magnets:
opposites attract and likes repel. So if you have two bar
magnets with their ends marked "north" and "south,"
then the north end of one magnet will repel the north
end of the other (and similarly, south will repel south).
2) How is a current-carrying coil of wire like a Moving charges create a magnetic field. Therefore, all

electrical wires have a magnetic field around them (but
only when the current flows). The field lines are a
concentric circle pattern. The direction of the field lines
can be found using the right hand grip rule. You must
know this. Grip a pencil in your right hand so that your
thumb points in the same direction as the pencil tip and
your fingers curve around it. The pencil represents the
current and its tip the direction of the current arrow.
Your fingers curl round in the direction of the field lines.

an electromagnet is extremely simple: by running
electric current through a wire, you can create a
magnetic field. By using this simple principle, you can

physical laws had been advocated by several thinkers.
Quantum Theory has been particularly intriguing for
scientists eager to provide a physical explanation of
consciousness. Loosely speaking, the point is that
conciousness is unlikely to arise from classical
properties of matter (the more we understand the
structure and the fabric of the brain, the less we
understand how consciousness can occur at all), which
are well known and well testable.

vicious circle for the instance by stating that people are
conscious of their consciousness and therefore
consciousness exists. Rather than starting from
personal experience it is preferable to define properties
of consciousness beforehand and to judge thereafter if
it leads to a notion that may be recognized in the world
around us and in our personal experiences.

will experience magnetic forces in opposite directions,
since the electrons are flowing in the opposite direction.
This produces a torque which turns the motor. The

A speaker consists of a circular permanent magnet
surrounding a freely moving coil, which is attahed to a
cone shaped diapragm. There will be an alternating
current flowing through the coil, generated by the radio,
microphone, etc. This alternation will be the same
frequency as the sound waves that generated it. The
current will induce an alternating magnetic field in the
coil. This will repel and attract itself to the permanent
magnet, thus causing the coil to vibrate. The vibrating
coil causes the attached cone shaped diaphragm to
vibrate and reproduce the sounds generated by the
original source.
120 volts at 60 Hz will be sent to the coil of wire. Once
a current starts in the wire it will produce a magnetic
field. This magnetic field will be alternating 60 times per
second, which is standard for an AC plug at home. The
iron core will become magnetized, i.e. the magnetic
domains within the iron will align, from the current
carrying coil and it will also alternate 60 times every
second. This iron core is only there for effeciency
purposes, it will amplify the magnetic field produced by
the coil. Now if a second coil is attached to the iron
core a current will be induced in the wire, since
magnetic fields causes the electrons within the wire to
move. This second coil just so happens to be a bulb
that produces light when held close enough to the iron
core. All this is is a transformer which uses the
changing magnetic field produced by the current in one
coil to induce voltage into a second coil.

The rules of the games for a space that is populated:
each cell with four or more neighbors dies, as if by
overpopulation; each cell with one or no neighbors dies,
as if by lonliness; each cell with two or three neighbors
survives. For a space that is empty or unpopulated:
each cell with three neighbors becomes populated. Life
seems evident because it looks as if it is a society of
organisms on the page that rise, fall, and alter like in
real life, but it is just a simulation. Bryson's mentioning
of complexity as being both natural and simple fits in
perfectly with this game. You can start with a simple
pattern that in turn does some of the craziest things
that don't make any sense when you're just looking at it,
but if you break it down slowly, that complexity is
following rules and guideline that are really very simple.
In all of the chaos there is order. It's amazing. The

detect nor define it, but we know we have this
"emergent property", this "inner life". To figure out what
is creating this consciousness we look within the
neurons and into the cytoskeleton where there are
microtubules made up of hexagonal lattices of proteins,
known as tubulins. Normally we have known the
microtubules as being purely structural elements, but
now we know they have mechanical signaling and
communication functions also. We are starting to learn
that tubulins can exist in quantum superposition and be
switching between two or more or both conformational
states. They interact with their neighbors to create a
dynamic pattern, or automata, in the mirotubule which
can evolve, interact, and lead to the emergence of new
patterns. This microtubule automata computation could
support classical information processing, transmission,
and learning within neurons. We know that qubits can
interact by quantum entanglement, so that q

The wall outlet produces alternating current. The
alternating current of the Thomson ring is transfered to
the copper wires in the long tubular thing. The current
in that is also alternating so when a coil is place on top
of it, a current will be created. This is the current that

Life seems evident because it changes, reproduces,
dies, and almost evolves. Bryson refers to the
complexity of some non-living things. Complex entities,
such as crystals and snowflakes. These things appear
in nature, so they're natural. The characters in the
game that lived the longest are the ones that are able
to follow the rules to where they always have exactly

The Quantum consciousness theory seems to be a
creative solution to the question "what is
consciousness" I don't really believe in the theory. I
don't think that natural selection could make such a
change in the species. I think that consciousness has to
come from something else. There is so much of the
brain that we don't understand. Maybe consciousness
doesn't start with neurons but with a section of the brain
we don't have enough information about.

magnetic field (magnetic fields are produced by electric
currents) the magnetic force makes a torque which
turns the motor. The commutator (electric current is
supplied externally through a commutator) reverses the
current each half revolution to keep the torque turning
the coil in the same direction. Magnetic force reacts
perpendicular to the both wires and magnetic field.
Steps: 1. A current flows through a loop of wire
immersed in a magnetic field. 2. Each end of the loop
of wire will experience a force due to the electrons
flowing in the loop of wire. 3. The commutaton will
change the direction of the current every half cycle. 4.
Each end of the loop of wire will experience an opposite
force due to the electrons flowing in the opposite
direction. 5. The loop of wire will continue to rotate due
to the changing direction of the current immersed in a
magnetic field.
2) How is a current-carrying coil of wire like a A current-carrying coil of wire is like a magnetic bar

because magnetic fields are produced by electric
currents, which can be macroscopic currents or
microscopic currents (associated with electrons in
atomic orbits) Magnetic field sources are essentially
dipolar in nature, having a north and a south magnetic
pole. A long straight coil of wire can be used to
generate a nearly uniform magnetic field similar to that
of a magnetic bar. the field can be greatly strengthened
by the addition of an iron core. Such cores are typical in
electromagnets.

Life is played on a grid of square cells; it expands

infinately in every direction. A cell can be live or dead. A
live cell is shown by putting a marker in its square. A
dead cell is shown by leaving the square empty. Each
cell in the grid has a neighborhood consisting of the
eight cells in every direction, including diagonals. We
count the number of live neighborhoods for each cell.
What happens next depends on this number. Adead cell
with exactly three live neighbors becomes a live cell. A
live cell with two or three live neighbors stays alive. In
all other cases, a cell dies or remains dead.
Life seems to be evident because by each rule it seems
like if it were going through life stages. The first stage is
the stage of birth as we start out being young, then the
stage of survival, when we are growing and working for
our food and srtuggling through hard obstacles, and
finally crowding or loneliness, when we are old we feel
lonely and like if we are bothering.

opposite poles attract. These repealing and atracting
forces are responsible for creating the rotational motion
that motors make. The coil that is composed of an
outer layer of insaltion and wires insides, transmitts the
electrcal current from one place to another. Once the
wire or coil becomes aligned with the magnet, it
becomes a mechanism that controls and transmitts the
current. The permant magnet, aka the rotor, and the
electromgnet on the stationary area surrounding the
motor, work together to complete one motion or
rotation. To move the rotor clockwise the upper
electromagnet is deactivated and the right side is
activiated. The magnets than repeat the process to
keep the motor running.

peramnet or bar magnet. As the current rotates the coil,
it points the magnet side North, attracting and repelling
the poles of other electro and permanent magnents.
Therefore, the magnetism that is being developed in a
current carrying coil is not simply restricted to being
defined as a bar magnet, but results from the current as
well as a strong bar amgnet that are made by putiing
iron inside the core coil of an electromagnet.

could possibly explain what consciousness is. In some
ways it tries to define the brain as a computer that

RAnd suggest that the more complex we are, the more

junctions, and the brain's linely state has proved this
idea wrong. But the most important aspect that does
not define a neuron as a basic unit of consciousness is
that it does not explain how it happens. Neurons cant
control how we learn to do things, what we say, like
other organism, rather they transmit these procedures
from one place to another. Like other organisms that do
not have neurns and still function similar to us proves
that there has to be something greater in control. I
believe this statment to be true. Neurons directly enable
the process to happen, but they dont aid us in our
understanding of consciouness. This is an idea that no
one will be able to explain because we can't even
define the word itself.

AC (alternating current) or DC (direct current) electric

You can learn a lot about magnets, electromagnets and
electricity just by studying motors. An electric motor is
all about magnets and magnetism. A motor uses
magnets to create motion. Inside an electric motor,
attracting and repelling forces from a magnet can create
rotational motion. The rotor, which is the rotating part of

because its whats supposed to happen. Because of the
unexpected chaos that results from lifes very simple
rules. Chemical reactions in life are very common and
natural. Life has chemical reactions on its own. Life
assembles, creates and reproduces to make more life,
just like in the game. This idea is complex to us
because we are used to the order of situations while
nature is spontaneous and inexplicable at times. The
rules are that 2 or 3 neighbors allow a cell to survive,
and exactly 3 neighbors around a dead cell cause it to
come alive for the next generation. Life uses the eight
cells surrounding each cell as its neighborhood

The attracting and repelling forces from the north and
south poles create motion. A motor works when an
electromagnet is connected to a battery source and
placed in between or surrounded by a magnet (think
horseshoe magnet). If the south side of the
electromagnet matches up with the north side of teh
regular magnet and visa versa and the electromagnet is
connected to opposite poles of the battery, this causes
a slight half-turn to occur in the electromagnet. This
turn occurs because of the way that magnets naturally
repell and attract each other. At the very moment when
the half-turn completes, the electromagnettic field flips
causing a change in direction of the electrons. When
this flipping is done correctly, the motor freely spins.

because its field pattern is like that of a bar magnet's. It

The human consciousness is often compared to a

computer. Our brains have synapses and nerurons and
a computer has switches. Quantum superstition has
various levels and particles. There is also quantum
entanglement in which particles are estranged in
detactchment and may not have connections. Lastly
there is quantum mechanics which describes the
strange behavior of energy and matter at highly
microscopic scales. These three views of consciousness
are the patterns of neural network activities that go
along with mental states, binding information in the
thalamuns and cerebral cortex, and the emergence of
computational complexities among the neurons. The
cytoskeleton and microtubules are role players in
consciousness.

by an empty square, and a live cell is represented by a

themselves alive, a live cell must keep 3 live neighbors

However, a dead cell can become

This is a good model of life because life does go extinct

Consciousness happens as a critical

Emergence theory states that
consciousness just happens, but how does it "just

is the computer of the brain. Microtubules are the
synaptic connector helpers
that interact with membrane structures. According to a

In a neuron, there is

these tiny nucleons are

protons and electrons. Each part
of a neuron plays individual roles in responding to
stimuli and consciousness is
not perceived by the neurons, but their individual parts.
So the neurons are

through the wire where part of it is immersed in a
magnetic field. This causes a force to be enacted on
the wire because of the flow of electrons. This flow
makes the wire move. Every half cycle the current in
the wire is changed by a commutator, this is a neutral
piece of something that allows the circuit to break
which allows for the change in current. The wire which
was rotating will keep rotating due to conservation of
momentum. Once the current is changed the wire then
spins in the other direction due to the opposite force
that is now enacted. So this causes the wire to keep
rotating in the same direction. The force that is enacted
on the wires causing them to leave the magnetic field
and rotate is called the Lorentz force

alike in an essential way. They both create the same
magnetic field. The way this is achieved is by the
electron flow through the coil of wires makes the coil
polar an inducing the magnetic field. The reason the
current carrying coil has a magnetic field is faraday’s
law. A magnetic filed is created looping around a wire
when there is a flow of current through it. When the
wire is in coils or loops it causes the magnetic field
lines become bunched and overlap causing them to
concentrate in the center of the loop. This is also the
cause of the similar magnetic field as the permanent
magnetic field of a bar magnet.

through coiled wire that is near a magnet and attached
to a cone. When the current is alternating at the same
frequency as the sound waves, like ever ½ second to
make a c note?, enables the cone to make the same
sound that was taken in. The alternating current in the
coil causes a magnetic field to be created. Once that
field is created it causes the coil to vibrate because of
the coil field being attracted to and repelled from the
permanent magnet. The vibration in the coil causes the
cone which is attached to it to vibrate as well. This
creates sound and taduh we have sound.

through the coil of wires. This creates a magnetic field
in side the coil of wires that is very strong. When the
pipe of wires is then placed inside it creates a magnetic
field in that as well, a sort of electromagnet. When the
light bulb has its circle loop of wire brought near the bar
it lights up when there is a change in the magnetic
field. This is true because when there is space in which
the magnetic field is changing with time, an electric field
is induced. The induced electric field creates a current

motor must use magnets. The rotation motion is then
created from the attracting and repelling forces from the
N and S poles. A motor works when an electromagnet
is connected to a battery source and placed in between

magnet paired up with the south side of the regular

connected to opposite poles of the battery then this
causes a half-turn to occur in the electromagnet. This
occurs because of the natural repel and attraction of

In 1970 the game Life was invented be a
mathematician named John Conway. The game was
carefully though out and the rules are that there are no
players or wining or losing. This game is played on a
grid with many squares. There are cells are live or they
are dead. The player has to create a neighborhood of
these cells. I downloaded the game and played a few
times. I did not really understand the game at first but
now I realize that we can see what we are living through
everyday as a game on the computer. The block players
are pretty strong the way that the four stick together
and can not be sweep away. The mention of complexity
from Bryson just means that having something be
complicated can defiantly be simple. And all problems
are natural.
Many people compare consciousness in the brain to a
computer. It has neurons and synapses acting like they
are switches. Quantum mechanics describes the odd
behavior of matter and energy at microscopic scales.
There are many levels, and particles, quantum
superposition can be in two or more places at the same

time. Then there is quantum entanglement where the
particles are estranged in detachment , and might not
be connected. The three views that scientist have about
consciousness are the patterns of neural network
activities correlate with mental states, second,
synchronous network oscillations in thalamus and
cerebral cortex temporally bind information, and third
consciousness emerges as a novel property of
computational complexity among neurons. These views
are not valid all the time so that is the problem with
consciousness. The cytoskeleton plays a ,major role in
consciousness and microtubules are components of
those. Microtubules are cylindrical polymers of the

continuous, that is never starting or ending anywhere,
the field lines inside the bar magnet must necessarily go
from the S to the N pole. (Electric fields begin and end
on electric charges. At this point we have yet to
discover any equivalent magnetic “charge.”) All the field

magnets. A motor creates motion using magnets. The
simple principal behind magnets is that opposites
attract and likes repel. So if you were to have two bar
magnets with each of their ends marked, the opposite
ends would attract while the same ends would repel.
Inside an electric motor, these magnetic repelling forces
create something called rotational motion. The rotor
itself is an electromagnet and is the secret behind the
motor. The magnetic field is constantly changing inside
of the motor and the electrons in the rotor keep
changing direction.

there was tubulins within microtubules that could switch
between two or more states like a computer processor

that was a combination of the two states that could
produce transmission and learning within neurons. This
could further be explained as the thinking that is going

opposite direction (one is facing the north, and the
other, the south side). This creates a magnetic field,
and when a conductor loop is inserted in this magnetic
field, the current flows through it, as well. The electric
current consists of flowing electrons, and once in the
magnetic field produces a torque (AKA-a measure of
how much force is acting on an object, causing it to
rotate). Then, it becomes evident that the electric
current is supplied through a commutator, which makes
the direction of the current, in each half cycle, change.
This allows the torque to turn the coil in the same
direction. This is because the electric current flows in
an opposite direction, and gives each end of loop the
opposite force. This will make the conductor loop rotate
continuously mainly because the electric current keeps
changing its direction (when it is flowing)...and that is
how motor's rotor is kept rotating!

the wire loop, which is within a magnetic field, and exits
the commutator through a brush on the other side, from
which the current returns to the battery (on the negative
side). When an electric current goes through the loop
within the magnetic field it produces a torque, which
turns the DC rotor. Because the commutator has a
rubber middle section to separate the positive and
negative ends, the current stops momentarily. But
because the electrons in the wire are still moving and it
is within a magnetic field, the wire will continue to turn
until the rubber part of the commutator no longer
touches the brushes, in other words, the current is no
longer disrupted. Since the commutator has both a

its smallest end. This part is within a magnet’s magnetic
field. A microphone or other source makes noises,
which create an alternating current that moves through
the coil. This current is produced according to the
sound vibrations from its source. Currents produce a
magnetic field around their wires. Because it is an
alternating current and within a permanent magnetic
field it gets attracted and repelled at the same
frequency by the permanent magnet. This attraction and
repulsion causes the coil, which causes the diaphragm,
to vibrate. The vibrations of the diaphragm are the

recreate the source’s sound (generally at a higher

movement of the life form, this means there's
complexity in the lifeform. Bryson states that complexity
is both natural and simple because it is proven through
evolution that as we evolve we become more complex.
Complexity is also simple because in order for one to
conitinue to be complex they need to stay alive, that's
it. In order to be complex and increase in complexity,
you need to survive. The character that lived the
longest for me was the character that I made when I
was playing around with the game. It lasted for a while,
but I can't remember what the exact layout was
because I was just clicking around.

in the neural aspect. There were also images that show
that brain activity is going on without the individual

loop of wire positioned within a magnetic field. This field
is created by the placement of two magnets with
opposited poles on either side of the loop of wire. The
wire then has a current run through it, this produces a
Lorentz force due to the electrons moving through the
wire. This force moves either end of the loop of wire. To
produce continuous torque, which would be required in
a motor, the wire must have the current changed within
it once every half-cycle, that would cause the rotor to
be moving continuously.

This source could be a radio or microphone, this current
alternates at the same frequency as the original input.
The change in current moves a magnetic field through
the coil which reacts to the fixed magnet, causing the
coil to move in correlation with the change in frequency,
the coil is attatched to a cone-shaped diaphragm which
then reproduces and amplifies the original input.

'Life' seems to be evident in that the rules are what
create the patterns and results, not the programmers
settings. Bryson is right to say that complexity is both
natural and simple, for it is with the few simple rules of
the game of life which an infinite amount of complex
patterns and series emerge. The characters in the
game of life which I saw to live the longest were the
blocks of four living cells, they would remain forever if
not interrupted by living cells moving across the grid.

individuals who study consciousness that consciousness
was simply the result of classical computation in the
brain. This view however does not account for
numerous things, such as free will. We can see using
advanced imaging techniques today which areas of the
brain appear to correlate with consciousness but we
can't say for certain they are responsible. Neurons are
composed of microtubules which contain tubulins.
These tubulins can be in one of two states, however it
is now known that due to their incredibly tiny size and
the speed in which they change states that they can be
in both states at the same time. Objective Reduction
(OR) will occur at different times, collapsing these twostate tubulins. Using the Orch OR model was can
predict when consciousness emerged, during the
Cambrian explosion in urchins and worms.

The end of the loop of the wire will experience a force
and will change the flow of the current, which is found
within. The reason for the change in direction is
because the commutator will end up changing the
direction of the current every half cycle, which will force
the current to flow in the opposite direction. As a result
the motor will continue to work because of the changing
direction of the current, which is found within the
magnetic field.
