The First Civilizations

The Paleolithic age
• They were Nomads. They lived in crude and
easy, movable houses.(like the tee-pee;also lived
in caves)
• The Paeolithic invented: Fire, spears, traps, and
bows and arrows. They also invented crude
tools,nets,baskets,clothing, cave paintings and
other tools made from animal bones.
• The Paeolithic people hunted
fish,buffalo,bison,wooly mammoths and other
types of animals.
• They never really stayed in one place that long
because they followed animal herds.(Nomad:
Groups who usually move from place to place).
• The Paleolithic people were the first people to use
technology.
The Neolithic age
• The Neolithic people invented farming,
communities, weapons` and tools.
• They domesticated animals(tamed),
animals provided meat, milk and wool,
they also carried goods and pulled carts
for the Neolithic people.
• They grew
barely,beans,cocoa,coffee,cotton,emmer,f
lax and many…many more.
• They started the Farming Revolution.
• They made pottery and carved objects
out of wood .
• They also built shelters and tombs. They
also herd animals.

Euphrates River.
They also invented the
wheel,irrigation,calender,sailboat,
writing, (cuneiform) math(60 min. and
hour) and plow.
They had many gods and they a built
temple called a “Ziggurat” to praise
them.
There were city-states and they had their
own government, king and god.
• City-states formed in Mesopotamia
such as Sumer and many more.
Assyrians
• They lived North near the Tigris and
Euphrates River.
• The Assyrian army was well organized.
• They were the first large army to use iron
weapons.
• They conquered many city-states in
Mesopotamia.
• They had a powerful, brutal and
ferocious army to keep power.
• They had a very strict army and because
of that they had very brutal
punishments.
• They had 7-day weeks.
• They invented libraries.
Chaldeans
• The Chaldeans wanted to build an
empire led by King Nebuchadnezzar.
• They controlled all of Mesopotamia
from 605-562 B.C.
• They were the largest and richest citystate.
• Artisans made pottery, cloth,and
jewelry.
• King Nebuchadnezzar built the
Hanging Gardens of Babylon to please
his wife.
• They Chaldeans sold their wares to
passing caravans or groups of
traveling merchants.

8000 B.C.-Neolithic age begins.
8000-4000 B.C.-New Stone Age
3000-1200 B.C.-People started mixing copper and tin.
2340 B.C.-Sargon conquers all of Mesopotamia.
1800’s B.C.-Babylon was built.
1792 B.C.-Hammurabi started conquering city-states
North and South of the Babylon Empire.
1750 B.C.-Hammurabi made 282 laws.
750 B.C.-Assyrians came.
650 B.C.-Assyrians empire stretched from the Persian
Gulf into the Nile River. Assyrians started fighting
each other over who would be their new king.
612 B.C.-Assyrian empire crumbled.

605-562 B.C.-Chaldeans controlled all of
Mesopotamia.
539 B.C.-Persians captured Babylon.
