Cornell Notes Mrs. Puschus Topic/Objective: Name: Digestive system Class/Period: Science Date: Essential Question: How do the organs in the digestive system work together to process food and get the nutrients our body needs to stay healthy? Questions: Notes: Digestion: where the body breaks down food into useable energy 1. Start chewing, mouth creates saliva which begins to break down food. 2. The food moves through the esophagus (which is a muscle) that moves the food to the stomach. 3. Food moves into the stomach which is like a mixer. It churns and mixes the food while breaking it down and killing harmful bacteria. 4. Food moves into the small intestine, here the body absorbs all the vitamins, nutrients, and proteins, fats, and carbohydrates for your body. 5. The liver and pancreas release chemicals to help breakdown the food in the intestine. The useable nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream. 6. The large intestine takes the undigested food. Here water and salt are absorbed. The leftover undigested food, harmful bacteria, and dead cells remain. The body moves the feces towards the anus for exit. Liver Makes a juice called “Bile” Juices digest fatty foods Juices go into the small intestine Pancreas Juices digest protein and starch (sugar) Controls the right amount of sugar in the blood Releases juices into the small intestine. Kidneys (excretory system) Clean your blood and get rid of waste Waste turns into urine which is sent to the bladder Bladder (excretory system) Holding sack for urine that is processed by the kidneys Urine is the waste that cannot be used by the body Summary: Questions: Notes: Summary:
