The Rise of Rome What is the early history of Rome? (how did it all get started?) (pg.239-240) Legend: Aeneas of Troy Legend: Romulus and Remus Fact: The area of what would later be Rome was a border territory of the Latins and Etruscans. Both groups struggled to control these 7 hills near the Tiber River. Some of the earliest Latin communities were established on the Palatine Hill. Fact: Rome began with the overthrow of an foreign Etruscan king ruling over the Latins in 509 BC. The early Romans established a REPUBLIC REPUBLIC = a government in which citizens elect representatives to rule for them. Why was Rome’s location so favorable? (pg.240-241) The Alps & Apennines Mountain ranges helped protect Roman Italy. The Italian Peninsula gave Rome a position to access trade routes and conquer new lands.
