Listen to radio adverts and uCreate commercial in their Sound Library Discuss and evaluate [ key Q’] - create a list (so children can refer to when writing their scripts)* Show the children the ‘brief’ and ask for suggestions to create a play script Re-visit script-writing devices and guidelines Clarify the brief and the importance of the strapline Agree success criteria (WILF) Children’s Activities: Set the children the task to write/create a script using the brief. Lots of emphasis on the competition elements ~ this really fires up their enthusiasm !! Remind them to refer to the evaluation of other commercials list * Rehearse Differentiation: Mixed ability Plenary opportunities (may be throughout session, not just at the end) Adults checking children’s progress. Support edit and improvements Invite groups to perform - ask class to be a critical friend ! Practice - Practice – Practice – Practice (check times) Allow time for all groups to record their commercial. Time to vote and choose the ‘BEST’ commercial to enter the competition with uCreate OR send all Next step: (What will the children be learning next?) Before we could submit our ASDA advert we spent some extra time on additional editing as the script was too long and quite a challenge – keeping the recording under 60 seconds. The listener cannot see anything so you need to suggest what is happening by sound. These could be sounds like, for example: breaking glass door opening wind howling through trees music to create atmosphere. (Sound effects should be in brackets like stage directions). What makes an EFFECTIVE RADIO ADVERT? Check √ Do they create a memorable/snappy SLOGAN or STRAPLINE ? Do they use ALLITERATION or a wordplay ? Do they use exaggerated language full of appealing ADJECTIVES and ADVERBS ? Do they ask INTRIGING QUESTIONS ? Do they give a TEMPTING DESCRIPTION of benefits ? Do they list the BENEFITS and GOOD QUALTIES of the product ? Do they OFFER good value for money, discounts or sale prices? Do they use HUMOUR ? Do they use CELEBRITIES to help advertise the product ? Do they use SOUND EFFECTS ? Do they use background MUSIC? Do they use ‘WELL KNOWN’ songs or tunes? Do they use UNUSUAL VOICES ? So do you like or dislike this radio advert? Why?
