A chance for children to experience ‘real life’ learning / a purpose and an audience.
Introduce the EXCITING uCreate project.
Listen to radio adverts and uCreate commercial in their Sound Library
Discuss and evaluate [ key Q’] - create a list (so children can refer to when writing their scripts)*
Show the children the ‘brief’ and ask for suggestions to create a play script
Re-visit script-writing devices and guidelines
Clarify the brief and the importance of the strapline

Children’s Activities:
Set the children the task to write/create a script using the brief. Lots of emphasis on the
competition elements ~ this really fires up their enthusiasm !!
Remind them to refer to the evaluation of other commercials list *

Invite groups to perform - ask class to be a critical friend !

Before we could submit our ASDA advert we spent some extra time on additional editing as the
script was too long and quite a challenge – keeping the recording under 60 seconds.
Homework: Listen to and watch commercial – ask ‘ What techniques did the advertisers use to
get my attention?

I had the radio on during the afternoon and would stop the children and listen to ‘live’ radio
commercials – briefly asking the children for their opinions
Radio Script
One of the other things you need to consider are sound effects. The listener cannot see anything so you need to
suggest what is happening by sound. These could be sounds like, for example:
breaking glass
door opening
wind howling through trees
music to create atmosphere.
(Sound effects should be in brackets like stage directions).
