Knowing more than one language enhances opportunities in several fields: business, law, medicine, teaching, technology, and social service.
The four-semester Spanish courses offered at Palo Alto College are organized following the
National Standards for Foreign Language Learning and Proficiency Guidelines as stated in
the “Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century.” The five goal areas are:
Communication, Cultures, Connection, Comparisons, and Communities.
At Palo Alto College, students learn about differences and similarities in meaning and
worldview. Students are taught basic to intermediate-level language skills, historical and
political awareness, social responsibility issues, geography, culture, and literature of the
various countries explored through media and authentic texts.
Knowing more than one language enhances opportunities in several fields: business,
law, medicine, teaching, technology, and social service. Speaking Spanish facilitates
transactions both at a local and multinational level, prevents misunderstandings and
promotes a high level of diplomacy among different cultures. The City of San Antonio and
its surrounding communities need a work force capable of communicating in both English
and Spanish at a standard level to aspire to remain competitive in a global economy.
