Gr 3 Space I like to begin with a bit of play based activity – I like to use lots of different websites so it pays to have kids bookmark them on the bookmark bar in a folder that you call space – that way kids just need to pull down to the website you ask them to visit 1) Go to Nasa Kids Space Place – play the games 2) Google ‐ Cool cosmos –This gets you to the website – Welcome to Cool Cosmos ‐click on the gearbox to get it to cosmic kids and then click on the tab ‐ask an astronaut – Here we are going to a. find out about the sun – do a kidpix page about it – b. then compare the moon to earth and do a page about it – c. star – what is a star – kid pix page Now Choose a Planet and We are going to do a report about it‐ 3) Kids astronomy .com – click on solar system – look at and discuss the planets and how they rotate around the sun Children now choose a planet and click on it, then find out how long their planet takes to orbit the sun. For each of the pages I follow these same procedure ‐ Go to kpx 3D – go to backgrounds and choose a space background– Now click on the T and click on your screen to make a text box ‐write how long it takes your planet to orbit the sun, then go to sounds and movies and click on the record button – speak into it – next click on frames and add a spacesuit – reading your sentence ‐ save as planet1 4) Go to nineplanets.org and take a solar system tour – In the Heliocentric view – click on your planet – then the distance meter and then the sun, this measures the distances between planets and between the sun and planets – Tell how far your planet is from the sun. kpx page – save as planet2 ( free time – play astronomy games – make a planet or make a solar system on this website) 5) Exploratorium.edu – explore – astronomy and space – click on your age on other worlds – do a kid pix page on it If I lived on ____ I would be ____ years old. Save as planet3 6) Watch space shuttle blastoff at http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/videos/space/shuttlelaun ch.html Watch the appollo moon landing from http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/videos/space/moonlandin g.html Go to Exploratorium.edu and click on your weight on other planets. Do a page on how much you would weigh on your planet – discuss gravity and how it is different on different planets – the bigger the planet – the more the gravity save as planet4 7) Kids astronomy .com – click on solar system – then click on your planets moons ‐How many moons does your planet have? – find out and drag pictures of your moons to your desktop and import them into kidpix and write facts about at least one of them – kpx – ( people doing venus or mercury need to choose to tell us something else about their planet)I also have them drag the graphics from the website to the desktop and then once they are in kidpix I have them import them so they can be on the page ‐ save as planet5 8) How big is your planet? Tell me how many earths would fit in your planet – go to enchanted learning – solar system and read and write about it –drag the picture that shows the relative size of your planet compared to earth – to your desktop and then import it into kidpix ‐save as planet6
