Photosynthesis
Where do trees get their mass from?
https://youtu.be/2KZb2_vcNTg
What did Van Helmont want to figure out?
What was the setup of his experiment?
What evidence from his experiment proved that the mass from
a tree doesn’t come out of the soil?
What do we know now makes up the plant’s mass?
What did the speaker mean when he said that we “become the
tree?"
Photosynthesis
The process where plants convert light energy into
chemical energy.

Carbon dioxide + Water → Sugars + Oxygen
• Take place inside the chloroplasts of the cell.
• Certain wavelengths of light are absorbed by
chlorophyll, a pigment in the chloroplasts.

Light-Dependant Reactions & Light Independent Reactions
Light-Dependent Reactions
Requires light and chlorophyll (to absorb the light).
• Chlorophyll traps energy from sunlight to produce
ATP and electrons to eventually run the light
independant reactions.
• Reactions use water.
• Oxygen is released as a product.
Take place in the
thylakoid membranes
of the chloroplast.
Light-Independent Reactions
(The Calvin Cycle)
NO LIGHT is required to power them.
• ATP and other molecules that were
produced in the light-dependent
reactions are used to produce
sugars (glucose).
• Reactions use CO2.
• Glucose is released as a product.
(glucose)
Still takes place in
the chloroplast, but
in the stroma.
How do plants obtain energy from the
glucose they make?
They undergo cellular respiration just like us!
Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy
Rainforests are often called the ‘lungs of
the earth’
Which is true?
What are the products of photosynthesis?
A. oxygen and carbon dioxide
B. glucose and oxygen
C. carbon dioxide and glucose
What is the role of chlorophyll in
photosynthesis?
A. Carries high-energy electrons from the
thylakoids to the stroma
B. Absorbs energy from sunlight
C. Converts carbon dioxide into glucose
Think Pair Share #1
✓ We’ve compared a cell to a factory.
How are plants like a factory?
1. What would be the parts in the factory, and what would their job be?
2. What is their product?
Think Pair Share #2
You are an evil villain participating in a plant growing contest in the state fair.
The prize is a lot of money and you want to win.
What can you do to sabatoge, or interfere, with the growth of other’s plants?
Use your knowledge from this class so far to describe your “evil” plans.
