photosynthesis
This is the way plants make their food.
Plants need three things to photosynthesise:
- carbon dioxide from the air
- water from the soil
- energy from the sunlight.

Plants can only photosynthesise in the
light. The plant uses light energy from
the sun to help make its food.

The plant uses carbon dioxide from
the air to help make its food.

The plant makes oxygen as a waste
product. This is useful for us because
we need oxygen to breathe!
This is the food the plant makes. It
is a type of sugar. The plant turns
some of the glucose into starch to
use later. We say it stores the
energy as starch.
chlorophyll
This is a green substance in the leaves. It absorbs the
light that the plant needs for photosynthesis.
chloroplasts
These are little discs in the plant cell. These have the
green substance called chlorophyll in them.
