THE CARBON CYCLE-part 1
What Is Carbon?

An element (a type of atom)
On Earth, Almost Everything
Contains Carbon!
Rocks (land)
Oceans (water)
Atmosphere (air)
Plants
Animals
Carbon Cycle
The same carbon atoms are used over and
over on earth.
 They cycle between the earth and the
atmosphere.

How does Carbon get to Earth?
Plants use carbon in the form
of Carbon Dioxide (CO2)…

Plants pull carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere and
use it to make food.

The carbon becomes part
of the plant (stored food).
How does Carbon get to Earth?
This is called…
photosynthesis.
Equation:
Carbon Dioxide + Water  Food + Oxygen
or
CO2 + H20Glucose + O2
Where does this happen in a plant?
In the cells of leaves

Plants make food (glucose) through
photosynthesis.

Glucose (sugar) provides energy for cell
processes.
Where does this happen in a plant?

In microscopic structures called
“chloroplasts.”
Where does the energy come from to
make glucose?
The SUN!!!
Photosynthesis:
Review:
1.
Where does carbon move from and to?
2.
What is the equation?
3.
What kind of organism can do this?
4.
Where does it happen in the cells of
these organisms?
