Greek Ideals of Government
Complete the graphic organizer. In each box, describe the form of government asked for.
Aristocracies
Aristocracies were forms of government in which power was in the hands of the wealthy
landowners. They controlled virtually every aspect of Greek society. They held a monopoly
over the military, they controlled the economy, they acted as judges, and they controlled
religion.
Tyrants
A tyrant was someone who illegally took power but had the people’s support.
Popular Government/Democracies
Popular government is the idea that people should rule themselves. Democracies are forms
of government in which citizens take part.
How did the hoplites help to change the aristocracies?
The hoplites were nonaristocratic soldiers. The chariots of the aristocrats were no match for
the hoplite heavy infantry whose members carried long spears. As the hoplites became more
important to the defense of the city-state, they demanded more say in the daily government.
In your opinion, what is the major difference between early Greek democracies and
democracy in the United States?
Student answers will vary but should include some reference to the rights of women and the
existence of slaves.
