Interaction in plants 2º ESO NATURAL SCIENCE SANTO ÁNGEL BADAJOZ jpg Interaction in plants Although apparently plants do not move, they actually interact with the environment, responding to stimuli The responses are slow and subtle, but they exist… Interaction in plants There are 3 types Interaction in plants TROPISMS It is the growth of the plant in response to a stimulus Positive tropism: growth towards the stimulus Negative tropism: growth away from the stimulus Interaction in plants TROPISMS There are different types of tropisms: 1. Phototropism 2. Geotropism 3. Hydrotropism 4. Thigmotropism Interaction in plants TROPISMS PHOTOTROPISM The roots grow away from the light (negative phototropism) The leaves and stem grow towards the light (positive phototropism) Interaction in plants TROPISMS GEOTROPISM The stem grows against gravity (negative geotropism) The roots grow towards gravity (positive geotropism) Interaction in plants TROPISMS HYDROTROPISM The root grows towards the presence of water (positive hydrotropism) Interaction in plants TROPISMS THIGMOTROPISM It is a response to contact It occurs in creeping plants, for example. They grow around the objects they touch, to get higher Interaction in plants NASTIC MOVEMENTS They are rapid responses from some part of the plant. They are usually reversible, and they are NOT DIRECTIONAL PHOTONASTY: quick response to light THIGMONASTY: quick response to contact Interaction in plants NASTIC MOVEMENTS Night PHOTONASTY Day Some flowers are open during the day, and closed when the night comes The leaves and flowers turn following the sun Interaction in plants NASTIC MOVEMENTS THIGMONASTY The flytrap closes quickly when an insect touches the inside The leaves of the mimosa fold when something touches them (wait for the video to see it in action) Interaction in plants DIFFERENCES TROPISMS NASTIC MOVEMENTS • Growths • Not a growth • Not reversible • Reversible • Directional • Non directional • Slow • Fast
