they actually interact with the environment,
responding to stimuli
The responses are slow and subtle, but they
exist…

There are 3 types
Interaction in plants
TROPISMS
It is the growth of the plant in response to a stimulus
Positive tropism: growth towards the stimulus
Negative tropism: growth away from the stimulus

There are different types of tropisms:
1. Phototropism
2. Geotropism
3. Hydrotropism
4. Thigmotropism

PHOTOTROPISM
The roots grow away from the light
(negative phototropism)
The leaves and stem grow towards the light
(positive phototropism)

The stem grows against gravity
(negative geotropism)
The roots grow towards gravity
(positive geotropism)

The root grows towards
the presence of water
(positive hydrotropism)

THIGMOTROPISM
It is a response to contact
It occurs in creeping plants, for
example. They grow around the
objects they touch, to get higher

NASTIC MOVEMENTS
They are rapid responses from some part of the plant.
They are usually reversible, and they are NOT DIRECTIONAL
PHOTONASTY: quick response to light
THIGMONASTY: quick response to contact

Some flowers are open
during the day, and closed
when the night comes
The leaves and flowers turn
following the sun

when an insect touches
the inside
The leaves of the mimosa fold when
something touches them
