Specific Objectives in Cardiology and CCU Rotations
MEDICAL EXPERT/CLINICAL DECISION MAKER:










To understand acute coronary syndromes and their management
To understand the ECG as a diagnostic tool and monitor
To understand echocardiography as a diagnostic tool
To understand the issues arising from inpatient and outpatient cardiology
consults especially as they relate to the perioperative time period
To understand the guidelines for perioperative cardiac risk assessment and
preoperative optimization
To understand cardiogenic shock and IABP, valvular heart disease,
dysrhythmia diagnosis and management including pacemakers and AICD’s,
adults with congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathies and pericardial
disease
Management of stable and unstable arrhythmias
a. Ventricular and supra-ventricular tachycardias
b. Bradyrythmias
c. Pacemaker syndromes
Understand the principles of external and internal cardiac pacing
Understand the principles of cardiac energetics, metabolism, conduction and
contraction/contractility
Develop the following technical skills:
a. Advanced cardiac life support
b. Elective cardioversion
COMMUNICATOR:

Act as a consultant for common cardiac conditions including acute coronary

syndromes and arrhythmias
Develop and communicate a diagnostic and therapeutic plan
Help patients understand their perioperative cardiac risks
Work with the cardiology consultant to make sure that the consult patient
care work flows smoothly and with clear understanding of the patient issues
COLLABORATOR:


Work effectively with various cardiac subspecialties (electrophysiology,
echocardiography and angiographers)
Effectively triage patients with cardiac surgeons
MANAGER:



Understand the operation of the cardiac triage program
Learn how to triage patients who require advanced cardiac care
Ensure appropriate follow up of patient issues arising from the consults
HEALTH ADVOCATE:


Help patients to understand the impact of their lifestyle on their cardiac
issues
Help consulting staff understand the implications of any treatment
strategies
SCHOLAR:



Critically review the current cardiac risk assessment literature
Be able to contribute to the education of the other members within the
consult team
Develop an understanding of evidence based medicine by attending
defined lectures of epidemiology and principles of evidence based
medicine at academic half day
PROFESSIONAL:


Deliver the highest quality of care with integrity, honesty and compassion
Demonstrate appropriate respect for the opinion of patients and team
