Definition of Perpendicular Lines
Perpendicular Lines intersect at a right angle
Perpendicular Lines Theorems:
1 - If two lines intersect to form a linear pair of
two congruent angles, then the lines are
perpendicular
2 - If two lines are perpendicular, then they
intersect to form 4 right angles.
Perpendicular Lines Theorems:
3 - If two sides of two adjacent acute angles
are perpendicular, then the angles are
complimentary.
Perpendicular Transversal Theorem:
If a transversal is perpendicular to one of two
parallel lines, then it is perpendicular to the
other.
Lines Perpendicular to a Transversal Theorem:
If two lines are perpendicular to the same line,
then the lines are parallel to each other.
To find the distance between a point and a line:
1. Find the equation of a perpendicular line
through the point.
2. Find the point where the two lines intersect.
- (use substitution of systems of equations)
3. Use the distance formula between those
two points.
Find the distance between the line y = -x+3
and the point (7, 3).
To find the distance between a point and a line:
1. Find the equation of a perpendicular line
through the point.
2. Find the point where the two lines intersect.
(use substitution of systems of equations)
3. Use the distance formula between those
two points.
To find the distance between 2 lines:
1. Choose a point on one of the lines.
2. Find the equation of a line, through that
point, perpendicular to the other line.
3. Find that second point where the two lines
intersect.
(use substitution of systems of equations)
4. Use the distance formula between the two
points.
