western classical music and to understand some of
the musical characteristics of these periods.
• To look at one musical period in more detail

1. When did music begin?
2. Why do we talk about ‘western’ and ‘non-western’ musics?
3. Is there a clear definition between popular music and classical

The Renaissance Period
Approximate Dates: 1400 – 1600
The renaissance period encompassed all forms of art and
culture, not just music – a key feature of many periods.
The word ‘Renaissance’ means rebirth
Music was liberated from the constraints of medievalism and
became a vehicle for personal expression, no longer being
expected to follow pre-determined rules.
Printed music – why was the
development of printing so important?
The development of printing
meant that music could be
distributed on a mass scale
and allowed the dissemination
of music across the continent.
As a result music started to
develop as a form of
entertainment, and something
that amateur musicians could
take part in.
Research Task – Renaissance
composers
• As a group come up with a list of 5 British Renaissance
composers.
• Find out when they lived, what sort of music they
composed and an example of their compositions.
• Let’s listen to some of their work
