Core Network Corridors
Aragon’s anchor at the heart of the European Transport System
FINAL Remarks
•
PLAZA’s success is due to:
- Its geographical location in the centre of the northeast quadrant
where over 80% of GDP concentrates
- Its connectivity: road and air
- Land availability
•
But an initial success, because to its full operation, PLAZA requires:
- a rail connection to Valencia (short term)
- a way out to Europe through the Central Pyrenees (medium
term)
Aragon’s anchor at the heart of the European Transport System
FINAL Remarks
•
The Core Network Corridors planned sample:
- Extensive coastlines poorly connected to corridors
- A dense Central Network, being reduce as we approached
peripheral areas
•
More precisely, the connection between the Iberian Peninsula and
France:
- Runs along the two coastal corridors through the Pyrenees
- Pass through densely populated areas with a large number of
passenger services. This hinders freight flows as they are mixed
passenger-freight corridors
- Absence of a dense network in Central France
Aragon’s anchor at the heart of the European Transport System
FINAL Remarks
•
The absence of periphery-to periphery connections results on nonredundant routes and cause a lower reliability in the supply chain as
a whole. This routes are less attractive to logistics operators than
other areas with a dense network
•
South Europe Ports will remain weighted against North Ports. The
imbalance will not dim with the planned network
