Exemplar for internal assessment resource Classical Studies 2.3A for Achievement Standard 91202
Grade Boundary: Low Excellence
1.
To achieve this standard at Excellence the student needs to demonstrate perceptive
understanding of a significant event in the classical world.
The task asks students to demonstrate understanding of a significant Greek or Roman
battle fought on land or at sea.
This is an extract from a larger submission of work. Within the whole submission, the
student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance.
The student demonstrates perceptive understanding of the significance of the Persian
Wars with specific reference to the battle of Marathon. The explanation why the event
was significant shows insight. The points made regarding the development of morale
in the Greek army and the negative effect on the Persians perceptively explains
reasons for similarities and differences in the attitude towards the battle of Marathon
(1). The student links the outcomes of the wars to the certainty of victory attributed to
the systems of government in democratic Athens (2).
To meet a clear Excellence the student could:


demonstrate understanding of the limitations of sources.

further explore the similarities and differences in the significance of the battle
on both Persians and Greeks.

Grade Boundary: High Merit
2.
To achieve this standard at Merit the student needs to demonstrate in-depth
understanding of a significant event in the classical world.
This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the
student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance.
The student demonstrates in-depth understanding of the Persian wars in many
aspects of Greek life, giving an informed explanation of the social, political and
economic effects of the war and making some comments on the outcome of the war
affecting the art and literature of ancient Athens – showing evidence of a range of
aspects. The comments on the change in the status of the lower classes (1) are
insightful but the work on political and economic outcomes could benefit from further
development. The student work focuses on the outcomes for the Greeks, with
particular emphasis on the Athenians; little understanding of the effects of the war on
Persia is demonstrated.
To meet Excellence the student could:

consider reasons for similarities and differences between the outcomes for
Athens and Persia.

explain with insight the significance of the battles for a range of aspects of
Greek and Persian societies.

Grade Boundary: Low Merit
3.
This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the
student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance.
The student demonstrates in-depth understanding of the significance of the wars for
both Greece and Persia. The student explains a range of factors regarding the
differences in military organisation of both cultures and confidently places the battles in
context by giving an informed explanation of why the battles were important (1). The
student focuses this informed explanation on the effect of the battles on the
development of democracy (2) and Greek nationalism. The student makes some
comments on individual components of the Athenian system of government but does
tend to make generalisations that the wars were significant to their development.
To meet a clear Merit the student could provide more in-depth understanding of how
the wars affected both Athens and Persia in a wider context – impact on other aspects
of life other than political.

Grade Boundary: High Achieved
4.
To achieve this standard at Achieved the student needs to demonstrate understanding
of a significant event in the classical world.
These are extracts from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission,
the student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance and
explains points in more depth.
The student demonstrates understanding of the significance of the Persian wars
through their explanation of the outcomes and effects of the wars. The student places
the event in its historical context and makes some comments explaining why the event
was important. The outcomes are listed by the student for both Athens and Persia.
The student comments on social, political and economic outcomes of the wars. The
student demonstrates understanding of the significance of the wars through their work
on the effects. The student makes valid points regarding the impact on the lower social
classes, the formation of the Delian league (1) and the flourishing of Athens as a
leading city state.
To meet Merit the student could:

use primary source evidence of specific relevance to the context.

consider the implications of the significance of the wars for a range of aspects –
such as social implications on the higher classes, impact on art and literature –
to give an informed explanation.

Grade Boundary: Low Achieved
5.
This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the
student uses supporting primary source evidence.
The student demonstrates some understanding of the significance of the battle. The
student places the event in its historical context and makes some comments explaining
why the event was important. The points made about the Delian league provide an
explanation of why these battles were significant to ancient Athens (1); politically,
economically and militarily. However some generalisations are made and the student
has made some factual errors. The selection of archons by lot was already in practice
before the Persian wars and the points made about the importance of the strategoi and
emergence of the lower social classes lack explanation.
To meet a clear Achieved the student could:

explain the significance of the event more clearly.

consider the implications of the significance of the wars for a range of aspects –
such as social implications for the higher classes, impact on art and literature.

Grade Boundary: High Not Achieved
6.
This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the
student uses supporting primary source evidence.
The student demonstrates limited understanding of the significance of the Persian
Wars. The student places the event in its historical context and makes some comments
explaining why the event was important, such as the unification of Greek identity. The
outcomes explained by the student are on a superficial level and lack explanation. The
points made regarding the strategoi require further development and the student
mentions the Delian league (1) but does not link its formation as a defence mechanism
against future Persian invasion or the outcomes of the league on Athens’ imperial
power.
The work begins to place the battle in context however there is insufficient evidence to
award an Achieved overall.
To meet Achieved the student could:

give more specific reasons why the event was significant.

explain why the event was important.
