To achieve this standard at Excellence the student needs to demonstrate perceptive understanding of a significant event in the classical world. The task asks students to demonstrate understanding of a significant Greek or Roman battle fought on land or at sea. This is an extract from a larger submission of work. Within the whole submission, the student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance. The student demonstrates perceptive understanding of the significance of the Persian Wars with specific reference to the battle of Marathon. The explanation why the event was significant shows insight. The points made regarding the development of morale in the Greek army and the negative effect on the Persians perceptively explains reasons for similarities and differences in the attitude towards the battle of Marathon (1). The student links the outcomes of the wars to the certainty of victory attributed to the systems of government in democratic Athens (2). To achieve this standard at Merit the student needs to demonstrate in-depth understanding of a significant event in the classical world. This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance. The student demonstrates in-depth understanding of the Persian wars in many aspects of Greek life, giving an informed explanation of the social, political and economic effects of the war and making some comments on the outcome of the war affecting the art and literature of ancient Athens – showing evidence of a range of aspects. The comments on the change in the status of the lower classes (1) are insightful but the work on political and economic outcomes could benefit from further development. The student work focuses on the outcomes for the Greeks, with particular emphasis on the Athenians; little understanding of the effects of the war on Persia is demonstrated. This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance. The student demonstrates in-depth understanding of the significance of the wars for both Greece and Persia. The student explains a range of factors regarding the differences in military organisation of both cultures and confidently places the battles in context by giving an informed explanation of why the battles were important (1). The student focuses this informed explanation on the effect of the battles on the development of democracy (2) and Greek nationalism. The student makes some comments on individual components of the Athenian system of government but does tend to make generalisations that the wars were significant to their development. To achieve this standard at Achieved the student needs to demonstrate understanding of a significant event in the classical world. These are extracts from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the student uses supporting primary source evidence of specific relevance and explains points in more depth. The student demonstrates understanding of the significance of the Persian wars through their explanation of the outcomes and effects of the wars. The student places the event in its historical context and makes some comments explaining why the event was important. The outcomes are listed by the student for both Athens and Persia. The student comments on social, political and economic outcomes of the wars. The student demonstrates understanding of the significance of the wars through their work on the effects. The student makes valid points regarding the impact on the lower social classes, the formation of the Delian league (1) and the flourishing of Athens as a leading city state. This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the student uses supporting primary source evidence. The student demonstrates some understanding of the significance of the battle. The student places the event in its historical context and makes some comments explaining why the event was important. The points made about the Delian league provide an explanation of why these battles were significant to ancient Athens (1); politically, economically and militarily. However some generalisations are made and the student has made some factual errors. The selection of archons by lot was already in practice before the Persian wars and the points made about the importance of the strategoi and emergence of the lower social classes lack explanation. To meet a clear Achieved the student could: explain the significance of the event more clearly. consider the implications of the significance of the wars for a range of aspects – such as social implications for the higher classes, impact on art and literature. © Crown 2010 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Classical Studies 2.3A for Achievement Standard 91202 Grade Boundary: High Not Achieved 6. This is an extract from a larger piece of student work. Within the whole submission, the student uses supporting primary source evidence. The student demonstrates limited understanding of the significance of the Persian Wars. The student places the event in its historical context and makes some comments explaining why the event was important, such as the unification of Greek identity. The outcomes explained by the student are on a superficial level and lack explanation. The points made regarding the strategoi require further development and the student mentions the Delian league (1) but does not link its formation as a defence mechanism against future Persian invasion or the outcomes of the league on Athens’ imperial power. The work begins to place the battle in context however there is insufficient evidence to award an Achieved overall. To meet Achieved the student could: give more specific reasons why the event was significant. explain why the event was important. © Crown 2010
