Stalbridge Primary School Year 3 KS2 Maths Multiplication Vocabulary: Lots of, groups of, sets of, times, jump up, repeated addition, product, factors. The children will need a knowledge of factors and their times tables. Number line: Example Questions: (one step problem) I see a t-shirt in a shop for £5, how much will it cost if I buy 3 of them? 5x3 (two step problem) I buy these three t-shirts every month for six months, how much will it cost me? Five jumps, each is two steps. 5 × 2 = 10. ARRAY: 12 (factors) 12 x 1 (5x3) x6 6x2 3x4 Stalbridge Primary School Year 4 Children will be adapting their addition knowledge to their multiplication methods in year four. Multiplication is viewed as the natural extension to addition. i.e. 3x4 3 lots of four 4+4+4 KS2 Maths Vocabulary: Breaking down, tens and ones, Place value, repeated addition Partitioning: 32 X 9 30 2 Two – step problem: X9 Many of the methods involve twostep problems, one of the steps being addition. Multiplication 270 + 18 = 288 breaking down and then applying addition. 32 x 9 The children will need to use their knowledge and understanding of carrying. The children will develop onto multiplying in a column method and gradually move away from breaking down numbers. In year five, children are encouraged to estimate their answers first, be using their knowledge of rounding and multiplication. 30 x 9 = 270 + Progression (30+2) x 9 2 x 9 = 18 288 Distributive Law: helps us to answer multiplication questions by breaking down large numbers into smaller numbers. Stalbridge Primary School Year 5 To introduce the multiplication of two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers, the children will initially refer back to the grid methods from year four. This can then be developed onto the column method, which incorporates addition. Children will again be able to break down numbers into tens and ones and then use their addition knowledge in this two-step problem. KS2 Maths Multiplication Vocabulary: Carrying, estimate, rounding, place value, Grid Methods: 23 x 8 = The children will need an understanding of place value. Progression to TU x TU 23 x 28 = 400 + 60 = 460 160 + 24 = 184 Total: 644 Two – step problem: breaking down and then applying addition. 38 Expanded Short Multiplication: 38 x 7 7 x 266 5 (7 x 8) carry the 5 tens (7 x 3 tens + the carried 5 tens) Stalbridge Primary School Year 6 In year 6, children are still encouraged to estimate their answers first, be using their knowledge of rounding and then multiplication. They need to be introduced to the new vocabulary of ‘integer’ meaning a number. The children will need an understanding of place value and how the tenths and hundredths relate to the hundreds, tens and ones. They can make the decimal numbers into whole integers by using their knowledge of place value. KS2 Maths Multiplication Vocabulary: Integer, estimate, pace value, tenths, hundredths, Multiplying 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers: 56 x 27 Estimate: 60 x 30 = 1800 x The two steps are; multiplication 56 x 27 20 7 50 1000 350 6 120 42 and then adding the carried 56 1350 27 162 42 1512 1 progression number. x (7 x 6) 350 (7 x 50) 120 (20 x 6) 1000 (20 x 50) 1 512 1 Carry the one ten.
