Vocabulary
Factor: a number that is multiplied by another number
Product: answer to a multiplication problem
Commutative Property (Order Property): You can change the
order of factors without changing the product.
Example:
5x4=4x5
Associative Property (Grouping Property): You can change the
groupings of factors without changing the product.
Example:
(10 x 9) x 3 = 10 x (9 x 3)
Identity Property: The product of any # and 1 is that #
Example:
35 x 1 = 35
Notes
Use the properties to regroup or rearrange the factors to help
you find a product more easily.
Example: (16 x 2) x 5 =
16 x (2 x 5) =
16 x 10 = 160
