Mathematical Properties
Commutative Property
- addition or multiplication
- change the order of the numbers, answer stays they same
- “numbers move (or commute)”
- Examples: 3 + 4 = 4 + 3 or
3x4=4x3
Associative Property
- addition or multiplication
- change the groups (parentheses), answer stays the same
- Examples: 5 + (6 + 7) = (5 + 6) + 7
or 1 x (2 x 3) = (1 x 2) x 3
Distributive Property
- multiplication with addition or subtraction
- “pass out” a factor to other numbers, get the same answer
- Examples: 6 x (7 + 2) = (6 x 7) + (6 x 2) or 8 x (5 - 3) = (8 x 5) - (8 - 3)
Zero Property of Multiplication
- anything times zero equals zero!!
- Examples: 4 x 0 = 0 or 0 x 12 = 0
Inverse Property
- addition: add a number plus its negative and you get 0
- multiplication: multiply a number by its reciprocal (opposite) and you get 1
- Examples: 6 + (-6) = 0 and 2 x 1/2 = 1
Identity Property
- addition: any number will stay the same when added to 0
- multiplication: any number will stay the same when multiplied by 1
- Examples: 9 + 0 = 9 and 13 x 1 = 13
