Providing Energy for Strenuous Activity and Healthy Recovery 1 Providing Energy for Strenuous Activity and Healthy Recovery Providing Energy for Strenuous Activity and Healthy Recovery 1 Horses are complex animals, both structurally and metabolically. They do not mind simple diets, but they do require a wide variety of nutrients to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is especially relevant for performance horses. These animals need just the right blend of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to compete to the best of their abilities. That is why we developed Stretch Run and Stretch Run Plus. When given approximately 2 hours before an event, our products support healthy energy in horses, which ensures that they have available power for strenuous exercise and quick recovery times. Their effectiveness stems from a key mix of vitamins and bioactive ingredients that support a horse’s ability to utilize oxygen, minimize muscle damage and effectively metabolize fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Stretch Run: A Blend of Ribose and Vitamin B12 Stretch Run’s Vibose blend, a mixture of ribose and vitamin B12, is uniquely designed to aid performance horses. Race horse owners who supplied their equines with ribose reported healthier energy levels during events and 24 hours after. As part of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecule, which is “the currency of energy”, ribose improves ATP recovery. ATP provides the energy necessary for the horse’s muscles to contract, allowing it to run. This means the body needs constant supply of ATP to continue moving. Unfortunately, during strenuous activity, the body uses ATP faster than it can replenish it, which increases stress on the horse. One study from a German university found that administering ribose to rats reduced the amount of time necessary for ATP recovery from 72 hours to 12. Vitamin B12, meanwhile, aids a horse’s ability to break down fat and proteins for energy. The vitamin also supports various enzymes used in the production of hemoglobin, the protein that transports oxygen to red blood cells. This oxygen is vital for a horse’s metabolism, generating the energy it needs for high performance. In addition, B12 helps to metabolize homocysteine. Elevated levels of homocysteine are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Providing Energy for Strenuous Activity and Healthy Recovery 2 Daily Support: Stretch Run Plus DMG for oxygen In addition to ribose and B12, Stretch Run Plus also contains dimethylglycine (DMG), coenzyme Q10, tart cherry and red ginseng for healthy energy and better recovery. DMG increases oxygen utilization during times of intense activity to help a horse make the most of the oxygen it inhales. Proper oxygen utilization supports lower levels of lactic acid, reducing muscle effects. When the body is low on oxygen, it has a harder time metabolizing glucose for energy. To compensate, it creates lactate or lactic acid. Lactate converts to energy without the need for oxygen. However, the body creates lactic acid faster than it uses it. This leads to buildup in the muscle, which results in an immediate burning sensation that can cause the horse to underperform. Lactic acid also further diminishes the body’s ability to break down glucose. By increasing a horse’s capacity to utilize oxygen, DMG supports a slower rate of lactic acid buildup in the muscles. In fact, a study published in Nutrient Journal found that administering DMG to horses may lead to less acid buildup in muscles. CoQ10 and tart cherry to support recovery CoQ10 is essential for producing ATP, the compound the body uses to create energy. Supplementing CoQ10 can help a horse recover more quickly after intense activity. A study by the University of Connecticut School of Medicine looked at how horses responded after receiving CoQ10 supplements before low- and high-intensity exercise. Their research found the levels of plasma CoQ10 remained elevated after lowintensity exercise but returned to normal after more stressful activity. This indicated that without CoQ10 supplements, a horse’s natural supply would be depleted which, as the researchers concluded, “could compromise their health and physical performance.” Tart cherry also helps with recovery after intense activity. It supports muscle stability, allowing an animal to recover faster. One study examined specific enzymes to see how muscles reacted to tart cherry after exercise, according to TheHorse.com. After strenuous activity, various enzymes are present at elevated levels in the blood. These enzymes are produced as an animal’s muscles are damaged during exercise. Researchers conducted several blood analyses and found horses that had received tart cherry juice had lower levels of aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase, two markers of muscle damage and inflammation, than those given a placebo. Less inflammation and damage means the horse will not need as long to recover after an event. Providing Energy for Strenuous Activity and Healthy Recovery 3 A separate study reviewed how tart cherry supports energy utilization in runners. According to Nutritional Outlook, members of one group who took a tart cherry supplement for 10 days leading up to a half marathon averaged finish times that were 13 percent lower than a group taking placebos. Muscle soreness among these runners was also 34 percent lower than in the placebo group. Red ginseng for fatigue Red ginseng is one of the world’s most popular supplements. For 2,000 years, people have used it to promote health and improve mental functions. Red ginseng is considered an adaptogen, a substance that balances the body and increases its resistance to stressors. It supports the central nervous system and energy use in order to help the horse resist fatigue. Some studies show that red ginseng helps alleviate chronic fatigue syndrome, and others show its ability to support increased energy. One set of research from the Kyung Hee University in Seoul, South Korea, found rats given red ginseng could run on a treadmill for longer periods of time before growing exhausted. A hard-working equine deserves the best horse products available. Finish Line’s Stretch Run and Stretch Run Plus promote healthy energy functions, allowing a horse to go the distance when it comes time for an event. Ribose and vitamin B12 promote healthy energy creation and use, while DMG supports proper oxygen utilization. Meanwhile, tart cherry and CoQ10 help muscle recovery, and red ginseng assists in stabilizing fatigue. With these nutrients, you can take pride in knowing your horse performed his or her absolute best, regardless of the outcome.
