Power Activities on the Marine
Environment in China

Concentrations of Nuclide ~(110m)Ag in
Marine Samples around Daya Bay
Nuclear Power Station
Radioactivity level was investigated before the operation of LNPS
(Ling‘ao Nuclear Power Station) based on the normal monitoring of
GNPS (Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station).
The results showed that nuclide 110mAg in effluents from GNPS
can be tested in part of marine samples such as pear oyster, algae
(sargassum) and cuttlefish.
Concentrations of nuclide 110mAg in pearl oyster and cuttlefish
samples from Dongshan which located nearby GNPS were higher than
that of Aotou which away from GNPS.
Cs-137 contents in the marine organisms,
seawater and sediment in Daya Bay before and
after the NPP operation
The contents of Cs-137 in some marine organisms,
seawaters and sea sediment in Daya Bay area were
measured by γ spectrometer.
The concentration factors for the marine organisms
and distribution coefficient between sediment and
seawater have been calculated.
The results showed that the apparent difference
between Cs-137 contents in samples after and before the
operation of Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant were not
found.
Ecological response of phytoplankton to the
operation of Daya Bay nuclear power station
Based on the data from 1991 to 2001,the environmental change
and biological response were analyzed.
The result showed that during the past 10 years, total inorganic
nitrogen gradually increased ,silicate and phosphate gradually
decreased from 1996 to 2000 and then returned to former leve1.
After the nuclear power station running, the average
temperature of the investigation area increased about 0.4-1.0℃.
In recent years,phytoplankton distinctly
went up during the end of autumn and the
beginning of winter,the amount of
pyrophyta and warm-water species generally
increased and net-phytoplankton generally
decreased .
Assessment of effects of Qinshan
nuclear power station
Based on the data of biological and non-biological factors collected
respectively from 1989 to 1990 and from 1995 to 1996 in the waters nearby the
Qinshan nuclear power station, the ecological environment and water quality are
analyzed and assessed.
The results show:
(a) the survey area has the typical ecological characteristics of the high tidal
range estuary-rich nutrients and low biological productivity,
(b) tide, runoff and offshore seawater intrusion are the key factors which
resulted in seasonal and annual changes of the various biological and nonbiological factors,
(c) the rising of seawater eutrophication index results from enormous
amount of the discharges form the industrial and urban sewage,
(d) because the survey area is located at a high tidal-range estuary, thermal
effluent from the cooling system does not induce to the significant temperature
changes,
(e) the first stage project of Qinshan nuclear power station has not made a
notable impact on the ecological environment in the area since running.
Conclusion

The levels and composition of environmental radioactivity at
the outlets of nuclear power plants and nearby coastal environs
in China have been investigated

Anthropogenic radionuclides contribute very little to the total
radioactivities in seawater, algae, fish and sediment samples.

nuclide 110mAg in effluents from GNPS can be tested in part
of marine samples such as pear oyster, algae and cuttlefish,
but within its regulatory limits.
