BacTrace® Anti-Bacteria antibodies are a
powerful set of tools for the detection of
human, animal, and plant pathogens. These
affinity purified antibodies offer excellent
specificity and sensitivity in immunoassays
such as ELISA, Western blot, lateral
flow, agglutination, flow cytometry, and
immunofluorescence.
BacTrace polyclonal antibodies can be used as
capture or detection antibodies. Often times
there is no need for a secondary antibody. You
can be sure that a labeled BacTrace antibody
is more sensitive than many commercially
available monoclonal antibodies.

Versatility
BacTrace antibodies and conjugates are well suited for most applications from basic detection methods such as sandwich ELISA to
more advanced detection methods such as inclusion in biosensors to immunomagnetic enrichment of bacterial cultures. This versatility allows scientists to use antibodies from the same product family for both capture (unlabeled) and detection (labeled) purposes,
eliminating the need for finding matched pairs of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies.
Specificity of KPL’s BacTrace STEC Antibodies
E. coli O157 Captured with Magnetic Beads
A sandwich ELISA was run using KPL’s BacTrace antibodies. Unlabeled BacTrace
antibodies were used for capture and corresponding HRP conjugates were used for
detection. The results show their superior specificity.

KPL’s BacTrace Anti-E. coli O157:H7 Magnetic Bead are bound with live,
washed E. coli O157:H7 and labeled with FITC Anti-E. coli O157:H7.
Bright field and fluorescent images are captured at 100x magnification and
overlain to best show both the magnetic bead and the E. coli simultaneously.
Sensitivity
BacTrace polyclonal antibodies are more sensitive than many commercially available monoclonal antibodies. Because BacTrace antibodies recognize multiple antigens on a given polyantigenic bacterium, these polyclonal antibodies also eliminate concerns over
expression of a single given antigen, which may be an issue with monoclonal antibodies.

BacTrace antibodies are subjected to rigorous purification methods. These purification protocols allow KPL to maintain specificity
against the target organism and ensure lot-to-lot consistency of our BacTrace products.

An indirect ELISA was run using KPL’s Anti-Staphylococcus aureus Antibody to
detect various gram-positive and gram negative bacteria.
Reproducibility of BacTrace Anti-E. coli O157:H7 Antibody
An indirect ELISA was performed showing reactivity of BacTrace Anti-E. coli O157:H7
Antibody. BacTrace Anti-E. coli O157:H7 Antibody is highly selective for the O157:H7
serotype and reacts minimally with other potentially cross-reacting serotypes.
KPL tested three lots of BacTrace Anti-E. coli Antibody against a series of bacteria
by ELISA. The three lots yielded similar reactivity patterns and demonstrated high
correlation lot to lot.

Human Pathogens
Within the BacTrace line, KPL offers affinity purified antibodies to a range of pathogens that cause disease in humans.
Food-Borne Pathogens
KPL leads the food-borne detection market by enabling immunodetection, basic research, and diagnostic test development with an
offering of highly specific polyclonal antibodies. These antibodies target the food-borne pathogens E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria,
Camplyobacter, Vibrio cholera, and Shigella, all of which cause significant disease and economic cost worldwide.
KPL was the first to develop antibodies to the “Big Six” Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O26, O111, O121, O45, O145, and
O103. STECs are responsible for numerous outbreaks traced to the consumption of contaminated foods and beverages. STECs can
cause hemorrhagic colitis and post-diarrheal hemolytic uremic syndrome with potentially deadly outcomes.
Communicable Pathogens
KPL supports human infectious disease research and detection with a growing offering of BacTrace primary antibodies, including AntiHelicobacter pylori, Anti-Staphylococcus aureus, Anti-Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A), and Anti-Streptococcus agalactiae (Group
B) antibodies. These antibodies are powerful tools for the study and detection of diseases, including ulcers, strep throat, and MRSA
infections.
Zoonotic Pathogens
KPL supports research in zoonotic pathogens that ultimately infect humans with antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi and Yersinia.
B. burgdoferi is transmitted by ticks and causes Lyme disease in humans. Yersinia can be transmitted by rodents and is responsible for
several high-mortality epidemics throughout human history.
Environmental Pathogens
Legionella bacteria occur in the natural environment, particularly ponds, creeks, and public water sources. Infection occurs through
inhalation of contaminated mist. Legionella is most well known for an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease among American Legion
members in Philadelphia in 1976.
Animal Pathogens
Renibacterium salmoninarum causes bacterial kidney disease (BKD) in salmonid fish. BKD is a chronic disease that causes mortality in juvenile fish and pre-spawning adults. Renibacterium salmoninarum has a significant impact upon both farmed fish and
conservation efforts in wild endangered species.
Plant Pathogens
KPL offers select purified polyclonal antibodies specific for bacteria of significance in the world of agriculture. Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. michiganensis (CMM) is a destructive plant pathogen that has been known to wipe out entire tomato fields. The CMM
BacTrace antibody is highly specific for the tomato plant pathogen but has very little specificity for the related potato pathogen Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. sepedonicus.
