Cell CycleMitosis.notebook April 21, 2015 The Cell Cycle Mitosis Cells divide by Mitosis or Meiosis. Mitosis allows the organism to replace cells that have died or malfunctioned, and makes an exact copy of the parent cell. Meiosis makes sex cells (eggs or sperm). These cells are different from the parent cell, and from each other. Jan 2510:50 AM Mitosis: } 1) Interphase typically, the cell is resting, doing its job. When it is ready to copy itself, the chromosomes (made of DNA) in the nucleus copy themselves, resulting in 2 chromatids. 2) Mitosis: A) Prophase Chromosomes begin to condense and becomes visible. The nucleolus disappears. Chromatid Chromatid B) Prometaphase The nuclear membrane dissolves, and the chromosomes begin moving. C) Metaphase the chromosomes line up along the Chromosome equator (middle) of the cell. Homologous chromosomes match up. (Homologous chromosomes are pairs of similar chromosomes, and are made of 2 chromatids). Interphase Prophase Prometaphase Metaphase Jan 2510:50 AM 1 Cell CycleMitosis.notebook April 21, 2015 C) Anaphase the chromatids separate and move toward opposite sides of the cell. D) Telophase the chromatids reach opposite sides of the cell, a nuclear membrane begins to form around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes begin to unwind. 3) Cytokinesis the cell pinches in to form 2 cells identical to the original cell. In plant cells, a cell plate forms between the two daughter cells to create the cell wall. Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis Jan 2510:50 AM **Mitosis creates 2 body cells, and each new cell is identical to, and has the same number of chromosomes as the original cell. Mitosis can happen over and over again!** Which part of the cell cycle lasts the longest? Why is the cell cycle drawn in a circle? Ways to help you remember the order of steps in Mitosis: IPPMATC Mitosis Rap Mitosis "live" Steelers vs. Mitosis Jan 2510:50 AM 2 Cell CycleMitosis.notebook April 21, 2015 The Mitosis Rap I is for Interphase it’s step one. The step before mitosis has begun. P is for Prophase it’s step two. The chromosomes double, dawg. That’s what they do. M is for Metaphase it’s step three. The chromosomes line up as you can see. A is for Anaphase it’s step four. As chromosomes pull away from the core. T is for Telophase it’s step five, right. Two daughter cells are made and both are alike. A’ight? Break it down: Mitosis tells all my cells to divide. Each cell puts chromosomes to opposite sides. It makes daughter cells that are two of a kind, two of a kind.
