Krebs Cycle Activity: Rubric
In a group of 7-8, act out the steps of the Krebs Cycle. Your group should successfully
illustrate the conversion of pyruvic acid to oxaloacetic acid, including all of the
intermediate steps, energy lost/gained, byproducts, and electron carriers generated by this
process. Not everyone must have a speaking role, but all members of the group must
participate in the design. Points will be awarded as follows:
1. Description of how pyruvic acid is converted to Acetyl CoA (byproducts
generated, necessary enzymes for conversion). (10 points)
2. Description of each intermediate step of the Krebs Cycle. Be sure to name each
of the intermediate products and the number of carbons in each. Where do these
carbons come from/go when they are gained/lost? (15 points)
3. Which steps generate energy? How is ATP formed during these steps? How
much total energy is generated by the cycle? (10 points)
4. Which steps generate electron carriers? What carriers are specific to the Krebs
Cycle? When will these molecules become important? (5 points)
5. Describe why this entire process is a “cycle.” What happens to the final product
generated during the Krebs Cycle? (5 points)
6. Participation/understanding of the process by all group members. (5 points)
