TYPES OF ENERGY Ch 3 Lesson 1 Forms of Energy TYPES OF ENERGY Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, Elastic Potential Energy, Chemical Energy and Thermal Energy What is Energy? Energy is the ability to cause change. What is kinetic Energy? The energy of motion. It’s the energy an object has because it is moving. What is kinetic Energy? The faster and object moves, the more kinetic energy it has. Kinetic Energy? The more mass and object has, the more kinetic energy it has. Kinetic Energy A roller coaster speeds along its track. It has kinetic energy because it is moving. What is potential Energy? Energy that is stored. There are different types. • Gravitational • Elastic • Chemical A Roller Coaster... As it slows to a stop at the top of a drop, it has potential energy because of where it is. It has the potential to move because it is above the ground and has somewhere to go. Gravitational potential Energy Potential energy increases if an object’s height above the ground increase. Potential energy increases if an object’s mass increase. Potential energy Potential energy of an object is turned into kinetic energy and transferred to the ground when it lands. Potential energy Elastic Potential Energy Energy stored when an object is squeezed or stretched. What is Chemical Potential Energy? Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. Bond Energy is released when the bonds break. Chemical energy is stored in seeds, and released by water touching the seed. What is Chemical Energy? The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy. It is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck. Examples of Chemical Energy • Energy spreads out(heat) in all Thermal Energy directions. • Carried by waves • Spreads out= radiates • We see it in the form of light. Carried •• We feel itby aswaves heat. Spreadsbyout= radiates •• Carried waves • Energy moves from one place to another Thermal Energy (heat) because of differences in temperature. • Carried by waves • Spreads out= radiates Thermal energy moves from hot to cold. • Carried by waves QUIZ TIME!
