THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM ENDOCRINE SYSTEM … • Contains glands that have many different jobs in your body – Regulates metabolism, growth and development, sexual function, reproduction, and sleep/mood. • Hormones and glands are the foundations of the endocrine system. • Triggers your secondary sex characteristics to start PUBERTY • Hormones: Transfer information and instructions from one cell to another. • Glands: Group of cells that produce and secrete or gives off chemicals. – Most important gland is the Pituitary Gland PITUITARY GLAND • Tiny gland located in your brain, powerful • “Master Gland” • Controls the activities of all endocrine glands. • Works with Hypothalmus to make your body work. • Controls the hormones ADH, Oxytonin, and ACTH Hormone Prolactin Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Function Develops breast tissue Stimulates production of milk for breast feeding. Stimulate Adrenal Cortex -Helps manage stress. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Stimulate production of sex hormones Female: Estrogen – Ovulation Males: Testosterone - Sperm Leutenzing Hormone (LH) Stimulates ovulation and produces progesterone in females. Vasopressin -Triggers Antidiuretic Hormone -Acts on kidney, concentrates urine, and preserves water in the body. Oxytocin -Released during childbirth -Starts contractions of uterus. Somatotropin Growth and Development Growth Hormone (GH) GLANDS CONT: • Hypothalmus – Regulates all hormones in the body – Works directly with the Pituitary Gland. • Pineal Gland – Location: Center of the Brain – Looks like a Pine Cone – A.K.A Third Eye – Produces Melatonin; which regulates our wake/sleep cycle. • Thyroid Glands – Control calcium and phosphorus levels in the body. – Thyroid: controls metabolism and growth. (HYPO/HYPER) – Located in your neck; looks like a bowtie • Pancreas MORE GLANDS! – Location: Behind the Stomach – Involved with Production of Insulin • Hypothalmus – Regulates all hormones in the body. – Works directly with the Pituitary Gland • Adrenal Gland – Produces reaction to stress or emergency situations. – Fight or flight gland – What word does Adrenal gland remind you of? • Thymus – Location: Sternum – Disappears after puberty, and eventually replaced by fat. – Helps with T-Cell development, and fight infection. GONADS • Depending on whether you are MALE or FEMALE these hormones go to work on different parts of the body. • OVARIES IN FEMALES • TESTES IN MALES ENDOCRINE SYSTEM •Endocrine System Video •Stages of Puberty ENDOCRINE SYSTEM • https://youtu.be/eWHH9je2zG4 PUBERT Y H T T P S : / / YO U T U .
