Science Project – October – OUR PLANET Students will demonstrate their knowledge of these three scientific concepts by developing a presentation which demonstrates the integration of how these three concepts work together on our planet. With all projects during the year the “format” or “display” is up to the individual student. All students must utilize the same information in their presentation. One key fact: See IT (what does it look like)… Explain IT (how does it work)… Create IT (how will I show it)… Rock Cycle Igneous - intrusive -extrusive sedimentary metamorphic Rocks are classified as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Weathering breaks rocks down into smaller pieces called sediments. Igneous rocks are rocks formed from the crystallization of magma Extrusive igneous rocks cool at the earth’s surface. Magma that reaches the earth’s surface is called lava. Sedimentary rocks are rocks formed from the sediments of weathered rocks. Metamorphic rocks are rocks formed from the chemical restructuring of a rock due to hear and pressure. Layers of the Earth inner core outer core mantle crust - oceanic continental The three layers of the earth are the curst, mantle and core. The crust is divided into two types, continental and oceanic. Continental crust is composed of mostly granite. Oceanic crust is composed of mostly basalt. The mantle is divided into upper and lower. The core is divided into the outer and inner. The outer core is liquid and composed of nickel and iron. The inner core is solid due to extreme pressure and is composed of nickel and iron. Science Project – October – OUR PLANET Plate Tectonics Divergent Convergent Transform –Fault The theory of plate tectonics states that the earths crust is broken into plates that float on the surface of the mantle. Convection currents in the mantle cause the plate movements. The plate movements are responsible for the formation of mountains and oceans. The three types of plate boundaries are places where plates move toward one another. Divergent boundaries are places where plates move away from each other perpendicular to the line between the plates. Transform-fault boundaries are places where plates slide past each other parallel to the line between the plates. Sea=floor spreading occurs at divergent boundaries in the ocean Ideas to help get you started! Lots of different power point presentations to watch! http://science.pppst.com/platetectonics.html Great internet resource for this project. http://www.kidsgeo.com/geology-for-kids/0043-plate-tectonics.php Add your own resource list: Science Project – October – OUR PLANET Science Project – October – OUR PLANET
