RESEARCH ASSOCIATE – Biology
(Cell culture and protein production)
Bicycle Therapeutics is developing a new class of medicines to treat oncology and other
important diseases based on its proprietary bicyclic peptides (Bicycles®) product platform.
Bicycle Therapeutics is rapidly advancing towards the clinic with its lead programs using
Bicycle Drug Conjugates® (BDCs). Bicycle Therapeutics is collaborating in oncology and other
areas to realize the full potential of the technology. Bicycle Therapeutics is headquartered in
Cambridge, U.K., with U.S. operations in Cambridge, Massachusetts. For more information,

We have a new opportunity for a Cell Culture Research Associate
This candidate will be primarily responsible for maintaining the Bicycle tissue culture facility
and its upkeep. The role will involve culturing a variety of mammalian cells (both adherent
and suspension) to produce cells to required timelines and formats to support a diverse
range of cell based assays for the wider Biology team. Candidates that have demonstrated
previous additional experience in a range of recombinant protein production and
purification techniques will be at a significant advantage. You should be self-motivated well
organised, diligent in record keeping, have a working knowledge of the drug discovery
process and be able to perform consistently at the highest level.
Key Responsibilities:
• Management of a tissue culture facility to support drug discovery activities
o General management of the tissue culture facility including upkeep and
scheduling servicing of tissue culture equipment and general maintenance
o Resuscitation, maintenance and routine passage of a variety of adherent and
suspension cell lines of hazard level 1 and 2
o Preparation of cells for assay in a variety of formats for the Biology team
o Manage frozen cell stocks to ensure adequate provision for assays and long
term storage in liquid nitrogen
o Maintain accurate and systematic records and documentation of procedures
• Production, maintenance, and archiving recombinant cell lines for ectopic expression
of proteins to produce proteins/antibodies and to conduct various cell based assays
• Provision of assay support to both biology teams
o Responsibilities include target biotinylation/tagging, bead conjugation and
general reagent preparation following defined SOPs
o Designing and running basic cell based assays on a variety of assay platforms
• Performing routine protein/antibody purification and characterization to support the
Biology team
o Akta FPLC to purify proteins by IMAC & size exclusion chromatography
o QC of purified protein by SDS-PAGE and Western blot
• Familiar with working under and drafting Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs)
Key Skills and Competencies:
•

•
A bachelor’s degree in a biological subject or equivalent plus experience of working in a
pharmaceutical/biotech setting
Significant demonstrable experience in mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique is
essential
Previous experience in managing a tissue culture facility is highly desirable
Experience in transient transfection using lipid-based reagents, recombinant protein
production and purification techniques are desirable, although training can be provided
Strong interpersonal skills; as a support role, effective interaction with Discovery and
Therapeutic Biology teams is essential
Good computing skills in MS Office suite software
Team player with strong motivational skills
Excellent organisational skills and close attention to detail
Familiarity with requirements of data integrity and use of Electronic Lab Notebook or
similar systems
