Year 4 Suggested Spelling Activities True or False? Write statements to explain their meaning of your words. Paragraphs Words Inside Words Word Ladders Research the word origin. Some of the statements should be true, and others should be false. For example, Astronaut-from the Greek word astro=star, naut=sailor Write a paragraph for each word, that explains its meaning. Be sure to write True or False next to each statement and underline each spelling word. Using one of your spelling words as your base word, jumble the letters to create new words. Write your spelling words in ladders, crossing words over when they use the same letters. Word Origins Be sure to underline your spelling words. Examples: You go to preschool when you are 12 years old. True or False Alliterative Phrases or Sentences Use your spelling words and write five alliterative phrases or sentences. An alliteration uses the same initial letter. You may include a word or two that do not begin with the same initial letter. You can mix the order of the letters up to help you. How many new words can you make? My Dictionary Antonyms / Synonyms Write an antonym or synonym next to each of your spelling words. Challenge: can you think of more than one? Be sure to underline your spelling words. Examples: Deep down in the dark dungeon Duncan the dragon dreamt of daylight. Create a Google Presentation for your spelling words to create your own dictionary. Create a page for each word. Type your word, you might like to: ● insert the meaning ● insert a matching picture (or create your own drawing) ● write a sentence and underline your word ● Write synonyms and antonyms for your word there r p lay i n The Conversation Consonants and Vowels Write your spelling words; use a blue coloured pencil for consonants and a red colored pencil for vowels. Write a dialogue between two characters using your spelling words. Be sure to use quotation marks around the words that are being said by a character. Underline each spelling word. Example: “Hey Jack, do you want to skate to the park?” asked Matt. Jack replied, “I would love to but where is that place?” Syllables Partner Testing Brainstorm Spelling Rules Illustrations Type your words onto the computer and break into syllables. Sit back to back with a partner and test your words. Brainstorm as many words as you can that belong to the same word family. Find and record a spelling rule that fits some of your words Write out each of your words and illustrate each of your words with a picture. Be sure to underline your spelling words. Prefix / Suffix Sentences Parts of Speech Find prefixes / suffixes in your spelling words. Write your spelling word in a compound sentence. Classify your words by parts of speech Research what the prefix / suffix means. Write your spelling word in a complex sentence. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. List other words that have these prefixes / suffixes. How much is your word worth? Assign each letter of the alphabet a monetary value. Rhyming Find as many words as you can that rhyme with each of your spelling words. Work out how much each of your spelling words is worth. Questions to ask; What is your most expensive word? Can you prove it? What is your least expensive word? Prove it? Can you order your words from least expensive to most expensive? Dictionary Skills with Spelling Look up your spelling word in the dictionary. Record the two guide words on the page(where the word was located). Riddle Write a riddle for each of your words. Answer each riddle. Adding My Words Vowels are worth 10 (or any other value) and consonants are worth 5 (or any other value). Write your words and then add each word to find the total. Illustrated Vocabulary Create illustrated vocabulary flash cards with your spelling words. Write the word on one side of the card. On the other, create a picture that the word represents, plus the definition and other related words. Snap Write / type out each of your spelling words. Play snap with your words. Add your spelling words from each fortnight to create a bank of words to play with.
