Word Origins, Prefix inter-, and Suffix -s/on
Recognizing and understanding word origins can help you
understand new and unfamiliar words. For example, the
word microscopic appears in "The Mystery of Mars." It contains
the Greek root scop. This root means "to look at." The prefix micromeans "very small." Thus microscopic literally means "too small
to be seen."
The suffix -s/on is used to change words into nouns,
comprehend + -s/on = comprehension
propose + -s/on = proposition
The prefix inter- means "between, among" or "through, across"
when added to a base word.
inter- + planetary = interplanetary (across the distance
between the planets)
inter- + session = intersession (between
academic periods)
