Word Study Homework Grade 5 February 14 – February 18 Monday prefix <inter-> (six words) Tonight you will sort out those words from your list which begin with the prefix inter-. This prefix means “among” or “between”. Once you have identified these words you are to write them as the example shows below. Work on one word at a time. First write the word and underline it. Then, write a “word analysis”. (A word sum is putting parts together. A word analysis is taking words apart). After that write a short definition in your own words which helps you to make sense of the meaning of the word. See the example here: (example) interplanetary = inter- + planetary. This word would mean between the planets, such as interplanetary travel. Tuesday suffix <-ly> (seven words + 1 bonus word) The suffix –ly usually changes an adjective to an adverb. The spelling of the base word does not change, unless it ends in -y. In this case, change the y to an i and add the –ly. Tonight you are to sort out the –ly words. Write each word out as a word sum and tell what part of speech the base word is. Example: quick + ly = quickly “quick” is an adjective. Adding an –ly changes it to an adverb, telling you HOW Wednesday suffix <–ion> makes a /zhun/ sound (seven words) The suffix –ion it is used to form nouns and it refers to “an action or process”. We did this last week, but this week we look at adding the –ion suffix to base words which end in a –de. When doing so, drop the -de and add –s + -ion. You add the -s because it makes the word easier to pronounce.. (–sion is NOT a suffix! The spelling of the base word changes by dropping the –de and putting in the –s) Sort out the seven words with the –ion suffix. You may need a dictionary to help you find the base word. Then, you are to write a word sum which shows how the base word changed when you added the suffix. Under the word write a brief definition. See example: word sum: decide + -s+ -ion = decision (you dropped the – de) my definition: “decide” is a verb. When you add -sion, it makes it a noun. Thursday Every night you should be practicing those spelling words which you misspelled on your at-home pretest Monday Night. Memorizing the spelling of the base word and then learning the rule for suffixing is our recommendation.
