Spelling Rules of the Week
Unit 4 Week 1
Vowel-Consonant-e Exceptions: There are some letters in the alphabet that refuse to be at the
end of a word. One of these letters is v. The letter e jumps in to help out.
Examples:
give
olive
have
Sometimes the letter e will do both jobs and it will end a word for a v and makes the vowel say
its name.
Examples:
five
cave
-ive Ending: The letters –ive sometimes work together to make the sound /iv/. The vowel does
not say its name in these words. It is sometimes part of a word and sometimes a suffix. As a
suffix it makes words describe someone or something.
Examples:
act + ive = active
Sometimes –ive words can have two suffixes – actively
-ive -ly
Adding Suffixes to words with the Silent E: When adding a consonant suffix to words ending in
the silent e, you just simply add the suffix.
Examples:
safely reptiles
hopeful
When adding a vowel suffix, drop the e, then add the suffix
Examples:
give + ing = giving
brave + est = bravest
