The Prefix uniThe author of “Why I Love Kwanzaa” uses the word unifying to describe Kwanzaa.
Unifying has the prefix uni-. A prefix is a word part that is added to the beginning
of a word root. A prefix affects the meaning of the base word. The prefix unimeans “one.” All words with the prefix uni- have “one” as part of their meanings.
The word unifying, for example, means “making into a single whole; one unit.”
The underlined words in the first column all begin with the prefix uni-. Match the
underlined word in the first column with the correct definition in the second column.

“the opposite of.” How many words can you think of that use the prefix un-? Write
at least five words that use un- as a prefix. (Hint: One word in this paragraph uses
un- as a prefix!) Then challenge a classmate to write a sentence for each word on
your list.
