What do I need to know for my CHAPTER 11 TEST? You should be able to answer these questions: 1. Why did Virginia’s land and plantations lose their value after the Civil War? Virginia’s plantations were no longer able run profitably. Farmers could not use slaves any more. Free slave labor was required to work such large plantations with many fields of tobacco or cotton. 2. List THREE things the Freedmen’s Bureau did to help African Americans. 1. They taught former slaves to read and write. 2. They built over 200 schools. 3. They gave former slaves food and medicines. 3. What is sharecropping? Poor farmers, who could not buy land of their own, would borrow land from a landowner to farm. They would then give the land owner a portion of the crops or profit from selling the crops to pay for the use of the land. 4. Who were the Radicals during the Reconstruction era? Members of the U.S. Congress who wanted to punish confederate soldiers after the war, denying them political positions as well as the right to vote. 5. What did Virginia have to do before it could rejoin the Union? Write a new constitution that had to be approved by the U.S. Congress. 6. What are THREE things African Americans did to take advantage of their new rights? 1. They became judges. 2. They won seats in the Virginia General Assembly. 3. They served in town governments. 7. Who was John Mercer Langston? John Mercer Langston became the first African American from Virginia to serve in the U.S. Congress. 8. Why did Virginia write a new Constitution in 1902 (Careful! This is different than the answer to #5!) Virginians wanted to limit the rights, particularly the voting rights, of African Americans. 9. What were the Jim Crow Laws? They were laws designed to limit the powers of blacks and to keep blacks and whites separate. 10. List THREE effects railroads had on Virginia’s recovery after the war. 1. Ease of communication was increased. 2. Different parts of the state were brought closer together. 3. Transportation between distant locations was much easier 4. Railroads brought new industries and new jobs to small towns. Towns and the economy grew rapidly. 11. Describe Richmond in the late 1800’s. It was a diverse community with many business opportunities for African Americans. It was the center of African American businesses in VA at the time. You should be able to answer these questions in complete sentences on your test: 1. Describe THREE different problems Virginia faced when the Civil War ended. (3 points) a. VA was in debt, Confederate money was worthless, and banks were closed b. Had to write a new constitution to reenter the Union. The constitution had to be approved by the U.S. Congress c.
