Name: Date: Period: Proteins: Amino Acids in Three Dimensions 1. Examine your amino acids. What are the 4 amino acids you have? 2. Compare and contrast the 4: What is the same? What is different? 3. The C’s and N’s attach to each other. Velcro the C’s and N’s together to form a chain of 4 amino acids. 4. What is the sequence of your peptide (chain of amino acids)? __________-___________-___________-__________ 5. Velcro together each group member’s peptide chain to form one chain. Make sure to follow the rule that C’s attach to N’s. How many amino acids are in your chain? ___________ What is the sequence of your chain? _____-_____-_____-_____-_____-_____-_____-_____ 6. Use paper clips to attach the side groups, where appropriate. Use the following key as a guide for which side groups should be attached. -A positive side group can be paper clipped to a negative side group. -A hydrophobic side group can be paper clipped to another hydrophobic side group. -A sulfur side group can be velcroed to another sulfur side group. -You cannot connect the side groups of amino acids that are directly next to each other (there must be at least one amino acid between them). 7. Describe how the individual amino acids formed the three dimensional molecule. 8. Explain the connection between the order of the amino acids and the shape of the protein. 9. Why did the boiled lactase not work any more? (base your answer on the paper model)
